Contemporary Art Practice allows artists to work in a role similar to a film director. • Artist employ a crew of specialized professional to help them complete their body of work. • Some artists work on a large scale, so need the support of a patron or sponsor to fund their “projects”. • An artist may assume a persona for an extended period of time to ensure the project has a level of authenticity to it.

  4. Cindy Sherman • Cindy Sherman (born in 1954 in New Jersey, US) is an American photographer and film maker. • She is known for her conceptual self-portraits. • Sherman works in series, typically photographing herself in a range of costumes.

  5. Nikki S. Lee

  6. NIKKI S. LEE • Born Lee Seung-Hee in Korea in 1970, Nikki S. Lee chose her American name when she came to New York in 1994. • After observing particular subcultures and ethnic groups, Nikki S. Lee adopts their general style and attitude through dress, gesture, and posture, and then approaches the group in her new guise.

Mariko Mori • Mariko Mori was born in Japan in 1967 and later studied fashion design in Tokyo. • Mori worked briefly as a model and later studied fine art in England. • Inspired by the Buddhist concept that all things in the universe are interconnected, Mariko Mori believes that art shares with electronic technology, religion and even fashion photography the ability to give form to our dreams, fantasies and desires.

  10. Tracey Moffat is an indigenous Australian artist born in Brisbane in 1960. Moffat currently resides in New York. • Moffat works mainly with photography and video and always with a collaborative “ crew”. • Moffat often pushes boundaries with her work regarding, women, race and class. • Each new series of her work has a very different “look” or process.

Practical Task • Create a body of work based on one or more of the artists profiled. • Choose a profile or personality that you are going to assume for the task. • Document all steps of process in journal • You can work in teams to photograph each other, or assist each other, however each persons Body of Work must be unique (eg. works should not look the same as other classmates BOW).

  12. Theoretical Activity • Students will further research the artists presented and create a PowerPoint presentation on any combination of the four artists (eg.1,2,3,4). • Include in your presentation examples of 1. criticism 2. artist statements 3. Your view of the artwork
