Hello! I’m Mrs. Liz Kirby B.S., English/Art Illinois State University M.S., Curriculum/Instruction Northeastern Illinois University Experienced language arts teacher: •2 years middle school •10 years Young Adult Program alternative high school •12 years RMHS (starting now!)
Do I seem familiar? • I am a community member, having lived in AH for the past 25 years. • I am an RMHS “family” member---both my daughters attended District 25 schools and RMHS. • I am fully invested in the future of your child, the community members of THE FUTURE!
Here’s the big picture: District Goals • Increase student success rate in courses (A, B, C) • Increase sub-group EPAS scores • Increase number of students taking AP classes and exams and passing AP tests
WOC1 Goals For This Year • Communication Skills: written and oral • English Grammar: sentences paragraphs essays research papers! • Reading: multi-genres, scaffolding-upward (“learning by lexile”) • Vocabulary: “stems” and whole words • Develop study strategies: • “Habits of Work”: organization/resources
Where we are now? • Stamp Sheets & Binders: monitoring daily habits of work, behaviors for success, and organizational skills • Cooperative Education: community spirit and skills for group-learning • “gists,” WTL’s, and grammar: summarizing and introspection = Writing To Learn • Communication process: the system of oral and nonverbal com • Vocabulary: “stems” and STEMWORDS to increase reading, writing and speaking fluency
Where are we headed? • Speeches and Media Presentations (QUEST) • Writing Process (MELcon) • Selected short Fiction and Non-Fiction • Classic Novels (Of Mice & Men; To Kill a Mockingbird) • Word Within a Word (250 stems by June! WOW!) • WREN Books (Writing and English)—District- Wide College Readiness Program • Independent Reading (1 book per semester/20 min per day, starting October…)
Student investment in performance =“knowing and owning” grades • Grading is updated online: https://hl.d214.org/homelogic/ Parent login info has been mailed home. • Students must monitor weekly. • Notes & class updates will be sent through homelogic to your registered email. (BE SURE WE HAVE YOUR CORRECT, ACTIVE EMAILS and PHONE NUMBERS!)
