    5. Ease of Deployment -- Domino Managed Client Notes Smart Upgrade Used to deliver major feature and maintenance upgrades to the Notes client(s) Supports upgrades from 6.x or 7.x to Notes 8 Provisioning Domino 8 can deploy incremental features and composite applications to Notes 8 Leverages Eclipse client provisioning technology in Notes 8 Works side by side with Smart Upgrade Policy based management Changes to provide new control features in Notes 8 New policy content/settings in Domino 8 to manage new features

    6. Ease of Deployment -- Smart Upgrade Problem – upgrading Notes clients on locked down desktops Solution - Smart Upgrade ‘Run as Admin’ Standalone install kit preparation utility Works with Any Smart Upgrade capable Notes client (6.0 and higher) All Notes 6.x and 7.x users can now upgrade using Smart Upgrade Refer to IBM Redpaper 4180 “Understanding Lotus Notes Smart Upgrade"

    7. Ease of Deployment -- Smart Upgrade Run As

    8. Ease of Deployment -- Smart Upgrade Run As

    9. Ease of Deployment – Provisioning Based on Eclipse platform embedded in Notes 8 Provisioning allows not only client upgrades but centrally administered features on a per-user basis Changes to layout Addition or subtraction of individual features and composite applications Domino Provisioning supports NRPC and HTTP Domino can also serve as a generic Eclipse HTTP update site Admins can control (via policies) end user enablement for updating Works side-by-side with Smart Upgrade Use provisioning if you want to manage add on features Otherwise, use the mechanism with which you’re comfortable

    10. Ease of Deployment -- Provisioning

    11. Ease of Deployment: Provisioning Eclipse Update Sites in Domino 8

    12. Ease of Deployment - Policy Based Management Architectural Improvements and New Control Features How to Apply Feature - provides admin choices in applying policy items end users (at item level granularity) Three options are available uniformly: Don't change/apply settings Set initially Set and prevent users from making changes Setup policy is no longer necessary (“set initially” covers this) Uniform UI across all settings documents (mail, desktop, activities, etc.) Simplified and improved UI (desktop policy settings, for example) New XML policy mechanisms support current/future Eclipse features Policy extensibility is there but not exposed – a future release

    13. Ease of Deployment - Policy Based Management New Policy Content to Manage New Features New desktop settings Replication settings Many new settings for navigation, prompt level, etc. More than 95% of preference settings are now policy manageable Inbox management (trimming) New mail settings Follow up, attention indicators, message recall and others Productivity editor settings IBM OpenDocument (ODF) editor options, default file format types (ODF, Office, SmartSuite), template management, etc. Activities policy settings And more…

    15. Lotus Domino 8 Administration Themes Ease of Deployment – Domino Managed Client Monitoring and DDM – Round Two Admin integration with other products Miscellaneous improvements

    16. Monitoring - Administrator’s Life before Domino 7 Domino generates errors and messages Error … “Object Store Manager: File does not exist” Message … “Index update process started” Log.nsf records errors and messages sequentially, but some messages are deliberately excluded Pros and Cons Pros: A large record for all errors and messages useful for debugging, but only if you know what you are looking for Cons: log.nsf becomes dumping ground for lost information Info not prioritized, organized, correlated, etc. Admins forced to look other places for current event info

    17. Monitoring – Domino Domain Monitoring Advantages As of Domino 7, all events are cached and tracked by DDM DDM.NSF is the on-disk version of all currently cached events DDM.NSF records a related events into a single report document DDM.NSF Pro: great for recording problem context Pro: great for tracking and organizing problems Pro: great for exposing knowledge about problems Pro: great for resolving problems Con: sub-optimal for tracking problem sequence Con: sub-optimal for extracting ad hoc data from reports Refer to IBM Redpaper 4089 for more info on DDM

    18. Monitoring - Improvements in Domino 8 DDM By Database views Indicators for reports that automatically close Automatic Report Closing probe WebSphere Services probe Common Corrective Actions for all enhanced events Reusable PC/PS/CA Dedicated customer PC/PS/CA entries Agents can now be referenced by Corrective Action and Event Handler Expanded Knowledge Base of PC/PS/CA

    19. The implementation of Probable Cause, Possible Solution and Corrective Action has been completely overhauled The DDM report interface is easier to understand Customer modifications will no longer collide with new versions Corrective actions are reusable Corrective actions can be implemented as Notes agents A single event can now reference corrective actions that are implemented in LotusScript, Notes formulas, or as a Notes agent Event Handlers can reference the same Notes agent that a corrective action references

    20. The resolution of many issues are not detected so their reports must be manually closed Now you can automatically close reports that have been open but inactive for a specified period of time

    24. Point to the WebSphere server and applications

    25. The probe will detect ... If the server is not running If the application is not found If the application is not running If the application is not responding

    26. Improved task monitoring on a per process/thread basis Eliminates false positives Supports tracking of multiple threads in a single process or thread Improves server performance by eliminating constant status line manipulation Provides consistent monitoring results for different monitoring mechanisms

    27. Monitoring Domino 8 Integration with Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) Enterprise customers can now view Domino and other enterprise application events in a single monitoring interface Domino now forwards events to Tivoli Enterprise Console Simple to configure using existing Domino interfaces

    28. Lotus Domino 8 Administration Themes Ease of Deployment – Domino Managed Client Monitoring and DDM – Round Two Admin integration with other products Miscellaneous improvements

    29. Admin Integration DB2 Admin Improvements in Domino 8 Domino DB2 administration usability additions DB2 move group container tool Admin Client support for DB2 Query View Row limit setting DB2/Notes default user Enhanced management of Domino master DB2 account/password Update and “outage-proof” Domino's DB2 account password UI to support clean updating of Domino's DB2 account password

    30. Admin Integration Domino/Websphere Portal/Websphere App Server Integration of monitoring capabilities/info for extended products Ability to monitor WAS (WebSphere) from Domino 8.0/DDM with auto-discovery. 35. Miscellaneous Improvements Admin Process (AdminP) in Domino 8 Performance improved - quick check for name in database Eliminates need to search each note in the db for the name. Improves design element and Reader and Author changes Critical request scheduling Change scheduled request (e.g.: run a daily request immediately) Dedicated (special purpose) threads for immediate/interval requests Ensures execution when all general purpose threads are busy Improved unread marks synch when creating replicas (optional) Direct Deposit Support for new features: Update Bookmarks & Replication Page on Db Move/Delete ? OOO Service Inbox management (trimming)

    36. Miscellaneous Improvements Database Redirection Problem: “Stale” db/server references on Notes after db moves/deletes Solution: Database Redirection Database redirect “markers” created by default on db moves/deletes Redirect is used when Notes attempts to open a moved/deleted db If referenced, the stale Notes reference is replaced If not referenced, the client removes references to deleted db New Domino 8 Admin Client tool: Create or modify db redirects Designate references for particular users or groups Database redirects are only used by Notes 8 clients, not servers

    37. Miscellaneous Improvements Database Redirection

    38. Miscellaneous Improvements Database Redirection

    39. Miscellaneous Improvements Automatic Maintenance of Inbox Problem: Inbox size can have a big impact on Domino mail server performance Maintaining Inbox size can be inconvenient and hard for end-users Removing many documents from folders causes replication and view update overhead during business hours Solution: Domino 8 provides new control of Inbox contents Administrators can centrally manage with policies or per-server configuration
