2. Advocacy Project Goals • Increase 9th grade success in Algebra 1-2 to 75% passing Algebra (1A-B, 2A-B, 1-2) by June 2005 • Include Algebra achievement data on a regular basis at math and counseling department meetings • Monitor effects of 04-05 requirement for all students to take Algebra and higher at 9th grade.

3. Problem Summary and Baseline Data • Data from 2002-2003 showed 62% of 9th graders taking first year Algebra, earned a C or above. 42% of 9th graders taking Pre-Algebra & Foundations math earned a C or above. • Data from 2003-2004 showed 60% of 9th grade students taking first year Algebra earned a C or above. 51% of 9th graders taking Pre-Algebra & Foundations math earned a C or above • Beginning in 2004-2005, students who would previously have been placed in pre-Algebra or Foundations (below Algebra) no longer had that option available and would be placed in Algebra 1-2 or Algebra 1A-1B.

Collaboration • The counseling team and the administration have worked together with the math department on this project.* • We have consulted with Margaret Calvert, district math TOSA. • Our Special Projects Coordinator has helped our NSF contact begin a tutoring program. This program uses strong math students as tutors for students struggling in Algebra.

6. Action Step Create “Leg-Up” Summer program to provide extra support for incoming freshmen based on low math scores, ESL inclusion and middle school teacher recommendations. Share CIM data for school, including math, with whole staff Counselors will identify students in Algebra 1 & Alg.1A who are struggling and share data with math team. Collect achievement data from 1st and 2nd quarter progress & grade reports. Status April 2004-August August October October -January Actions Steps

8. Results So Far: Current Data • 96% of 9th graders are enrolled in Algebra or higher. 4% are in Special Education (SLC-A, B & LS) math classes. • 65% of 9th graders in all Algebra classes (Algebra 1-2 and Algebra 1A-B) are receiving a C or better. • 53% of 9th graders were passing Algebra 1A at the semester with a C or better. • 74 % of 9th graders were passing Algebra 1 at the semester with a C or better.

Next Steps • Counselors and administrators will have a discussion with the math department about whether the department wants to collaborate next year, and set mutual goals for 2005-2006. • Propose adding a sub-goal of __* % passing Algebra for all ethnic groups. *to be mutually determined with math department. • Explore having a summer Credit Retrieval program for students not passing Algebra 1A-B. • Explore ways to increase enrollment in higher level math classes by ethnic groups.
