  1. Do Now • Please sit in your assigned seat (before spring break) • Copy the HW: • Quiz on Section 4 Wednesday! • I am passing out a short study guide for the quiz. • Copy the definition for Sima Qian from page 156

  2. Sima Qian • A Chinese scholar, astronomer, and historian; author of the most important history of ancient China, Historical Records

  3. The Han Dynasty • The second official Chinese dynasty, after the Qin dynasty. • Han emperors began to change the way China was ruled. • A time of economic success, learning, and advances in technology. • You will visit six stations, at each one you will read about an achievement of the Han Dynasty. • After discussing the achievement with your group, independently you will create a stamp for each achievement. • Each stamp should have pictures to represent the contributions made by the Han Dynasty and a word that describes the contribution. • On the lines next to the stamp, write a few sentences describing the importance of the contributions.

Han Dynasty Achievements • Government • Changed the way it ruled to reflect the ideas of Confucius • Less harsh • Introduced the merit system • Civil service members had to be trained in Confucianism • A History of China • Before, there were only oral traditions and stories telling about China’s past • Sima Qian wrote the first written history of China, called Historical Records • Helps us better understand the people, events, and stories that have shaped Chinese history

Han Dynasty Achievements • The arts • silk weaving, bronze working, jade carvings, paper • paper changed the way people could communicate and keep records • people could afford to write more • paper was also easier to bind together into books • Medicine • involved ideas and treatments that are still used in traditional Chinese healing today • Illnesses = yin and yang out of balance • Acupuncture = thin needles to heal sudden illnesses • Circulatory system = heartbeat

Han Dynasty Achievements • Science • Astronomy- studied the stars, comets, moon • Seismograph- detected earthquakes from 100s miles away • Magnetic compass- helped align buildings N, S, E, W • Agriculture • Chain pump- allowed easier irrigation • Iron plow- stronger, durable, more efficient • Wheelbarrow- allowed easier and faster transportation of goods
