Avignon’s Places of Interest • Ramparts • They were walls built to protect the city from outside forces. • They were four kilometers long and eight meters high. • They were made around the 1300s, and they still can be found today. The fortifications have been standing for about 700 years! • If you like looking at ancient buildings and how they made them, you can check this out. This is a mini wall of china.

Continued… • Le Palais des Papes • This means Pope’s palace. • It has golden statues and people say there are ghosts there. • There are plenty of frescoes inside and has also been made in the 1300s. • Visitors can see about 20 rooms, several historic scenes and it is one of the most visited monuments in France.

  6. Continued… This was made in the twelfth century. This monument has a song to it named Sur Pont d’avignon. The bridge stretches from approximately 900 meters and has some 22 arches. It was a pilgrimage route from Italy to Spain. At each crossing of the bridge, the popes prayed for Benezet and left a gift for him.

  11. History of Avignon • Avignon was very populated with over 4000 to 6000 people residing in it during the Middle Ages. It was like a modern day New York City. • It was a city of popes where they traveled on the Saint Bénezet Bridge and built several palaces for themselves. • Also, they built many ramparts, walls, and cathedrals. • Avignon was a crossing place for popes to get from Italy to Spain.
