Idea of establishing KOSIX • KOSIX was established by Regulatory Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications • The project was supported by Norwegian government and CISCO. • Expert support provided by/through USAID and PCH. • Premises made available by the University of Prishtina, Kosovo. 4
KOSIX project Implementation • Second time at an IXP Update • KOSIX = 2 years old (www.kosix.net) • Uses CISCO switching fabrics • 4 local ISP members • IPKO (www.ipko.com) • PTK (www.ptkonline.com) • Kujtesa (www.kujtesa.com) • Artmotion (www.artmotion.net) 5
Membership & technical policies • Membership: • One off membership tariff - 500€ • Tariffs for connection to the KOSIX ports for the ISP’s: • each 100 Mbps Ethernet 100 € per month • each 1 Gbps Ethernet 200 € per month • each 10 Gbps Ethernet 500 € per month • Technical policies: • Layer-2 (Ethernet) • 0x0800 - IPv4 • 0x0806 - ARP • 0x86dd - IPv6 • Layer-3 (IP) 6
KOSIX in numbers • Peak traffic: • 160 Mbps • 51 active ISPs in the market • Incumbent ISP’s overall market share is lower than alternative operator both by revenue and number of subscribers 8
Conclusion of KOSIX main objectives & achievements Objectives: • Become RIPE NCC member. • Become Euro-IX member. • To maintain good relationship with major ICT players in Kosovo, and in the region. • Prepare a strategy for expansion, collocation services with local and regional players Achievements: • Established a working group (in cooperation with ISP’s) • Finalized KOSIX regulations. • Finalized the KOSIX website (www.kosix.net) • ISP’s Investments in modern infrastructure • Significant potential for growth through innovative marketing and sales strategies 15
