Introduction • What is FTP? FTP is a easy way to transfer files between your PC and remote computers. Whether publishing your Web page, or transferring large files between your home and School, The FTP software is one way to achieve this.
Discussion • What is the learning objective in this session? To show how to transfer files, and images from your home computers into your UMBC account. • How is this relevant to you? Both students on holidays at home, and commuter students could take advantage of access to their account while at home.
Step 1 • Install the UMBCInternet software which you can obtain for free from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), located at ECS 125, or • See this link http://www.umbc.edu/oit/cd/index.html
Step 2 • Push the ‘START’ icon and select ‘ALL PROGRAMS’. From the resulting list look for the “WS_FTP” link. Another link will be opened. Select: “WS_FTP95 LE”. See Diagram
Step 3 • The next view is that of the window that comes up for further execution. You will have to enter: • a “Profile Name” of your choice or leave the default as is, • a “Host Name/Address” which should be “gl.umbc.edu” to access your GL account at UMBC, • a “Host Type”, for the many options offered at UMBC • The “User ID” is the last required entry at this stage, see diagram
Step 4 • After pushing the enter button, you will be asked for the “Password for the “User ID” entered in the previous window
Step 5 At this time you will be inside your remote terminal at UMBC. There are two windows in the resulting block. The one on your right is your GL account, and the one on your left is you desktop directory at home. You can navigate through these windows by double clicking on the files or directories.
Step 6 To get to your “ W ” drive you will need to double click on the: • “ .. ” back up sign in the GL folder • “ pub ” in the resulting folder, and • “ www ” in the next folder. At this time you can transfer files and folders into you “ W ” drive by selecting the home folder, and pushing the arrow directed into your GL directory. NOTE: select automatic at the bottom of the window to protect the integrity of your document.
