  1. Sermon • 1 Peter 1:10-16 • What the Prophets Knew • Introduction

  2. Six months from now I see myself and I’m like some invincible fearless black guy, like Shaft or Bryant Gumble, and knowing that, it's already changed me.” • FLASH FORWARD • – Do you live differently because of your future?

  3. Christmas and the Incarnation give us HOPE WITH A FACE.

  4. Society today suffers from the loss of a sense of life as part of a larger story, a transcendent history. Modern people in general do not see their lives as part of the history of the world that has moral meaning and is proceeding to a definite conclusion and fulfillment in a day of a divine finale . - David Wells

  5. “The premise of this book is that human beings need to organize the partly formed sensations amid which we pass our days – pain, desire, pleasure, fear- into a story. When that story leads somewhere and helps us navigate through life to its inevitable terminus in death, it gives us hope…

  6. …We must imagine some end to life that transcends our own tiny allotment of days and hours if we are to keep at bay the dim, back of the mind suspicion that one may be adrift in an absurd world – we must overcome the lurking suspicion that all our getting and spending amounts to nothing more than fidgeting while we wait for death.” Andrew Del Banco

  7. 1 Peter 1:10-16 • Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

  8. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

  9. Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “You shall be Holy for I Am Holy.”

  10. WHAT THE PROPHETS KNEW • WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

  11. What the Prophets Knew… • - the Messiah would come and bring salvation by grace • - He would suffer: Is 53 – he had to die • -He would have glory Is. 9 • - He would bring about blessing to all the nations of the earth: Is. 9

  12. -This message was revealed not for the prophets alone, but for a future generation: 1 Pet 1:10-13 • -They knew enough for Jesus to say to Nicodemus, “You are a teacher of Israel and you know not these things” referring to the new birth – John 3

  13. Peter says THAT The great story of this world, the meaning of human history, is Jesus Christ.

  14. WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE? • Peter gives three commands by way of results – Hope fully, Don’t be conformed to lusts, Live in reverent fear. • Hope is not an action of the body. It is an experience of the soul

  15. CHRISTIAN, what is our FLASH FORWARD? • - it is a glorious future as redeemed beloved children whose sole desire is to please God. • - it is an eternal Sabbath where the work of redemption, sanctification, preservation, glorification is finished and perfected for ever

  16. - it is the fulfillment of knowing what it means to be hidden with Christ in God • - it is to be revealed with Christ in glory • - we have an anchor beyond the veil Heb 12

  17. “The worst that can happen - death comes upon me and all it can do is make me into a blindingly radiant immortal person who actually pulsates throughout with such energy and love and nobility and joy that no one can now imagine. It is to become a bright stainless mirror reflecting back to God his own boundless power, love, goodness and delight.”

  18. If you could see the believer next to you, if you could see the believer in Christ who works with you at the office, if you could see that Christian man or woman walking down a crowded city street - if you saw him or her as he or she will one day appear when the full majesty of God's salvation is upon him and when she is in her glorified body and has been made like Christ…

  19. … I say, you would be tempted, and everyone else on that street would be tempted, to fall down on your knees in front of that person and worship him or her. The difference between the Christian and the non-Christian would be so vast, so terrible; it would take our breath away. (CS Lewis)

  20. OUR FLASH FORWARD SHOULD empower us to purify ourselves and to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age.

  21. God is more concerned that we have an eternal HOPE than a temporal happiness. • Christianity is this: grace first, hope second • THE ESSENCE OF Christianity and Christmas isn’t about our doing, but our Hoping.

  22. The ABC’s of coming to faith – • A - Admit that you’re weak and need grace and strength – That means there is GOOD NEWS FOR YOU   • B- Believe that Jesus is the only savior who can heal your heart. • C- confess to God that you want to trust Jesus as your savior and Lord.
