Forest School at Churchdown Village Infants. Forest School:. Uses the outdoor environment to help all children learn. Encourages children to develop independence and to work as part of a team, improves language and decision making and raises their self-esteem through small achievable tasks.

Forest School: • Uses the outdoor environment to help all children learn. • Encourages children to develop independence and to work as part of a team, improves language and decision making and raises their self-esteem through small achievable tasks. • Sessions are child-led to accommodate different learning styles and the adult’s role is facilitative. • Sessions led by one of three trained Forest School Leaders – Miss Keating, Miss Mahoney and Mr Cutler.
Routine for 2 hour session: • Get changed for Forest School • Sticky elbows • Walk to base camp singing Forest School song • At base camp children recap safety rules • Children made aware of any new safety issues as a result of safety sweep • Listening activity • Focused activity with planned objective • Recap activities, introduce new activity • Children choose activity • Break / snack at base camp • Finish activities, 1-2-3 where are you?, tidy up • Plenary at base camp • Sticky elbows on exit from Forest School • Get changed
Examples of Curriculum links: • Physical Development – Children are outside walking and running, climbing and hanging from branches, carrying branches and digging. • Creative Development - Making their own equipment and choosing activities using their own initiative and resources. • Maths – Find something that is longer than 20cms, lighter than100g etc. • Literacy – Language development e.g. “This mud is squelchy”. • Science – Investigating and mixing materials – mud soup! Identifying flora and fauna in its natural environment.
Clothing Children will always need: • Woolly hat or sun hat • Jacket / waterproof coat • Long sleeved top e.g. fleece or sweatshirt • Long trousers • Change of footwear, ideally wellies • In winter they will need extra layers and gloves • We go out in all weathers apart from thunder and lightening so that children experience the extremities of the great British weather. • Clothing may be left at school for the Enrichment 3 week block.
