  1. Thunder Bay Shipwrecks CS4760 Group 3 – Spring 2014 Low Fidelity Prototype Walkthrough February 14th, 2014

  2. About Thunder Bay • Scientist: TaneCasserly, Maritime Archaeologist • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration • Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary • www.thunderbay.noaa.gov

  3. Use Scenario #1: Camille

  4. Camille’s Super SCUBA Adventure • Camille has decided that rock climbing is getting old • Has SCUBAdived before, but never to shipwrecks • Searches for information on shipwrecks, finds Thunder Bay application and downloads it • Is more excited about getting as many wrecks into her trip as possible • Her usage: navigates using the map, viewing details of wrecks near each other from the map directly and planning a trip by that information

  5. Camille: A Walkthrough • Camille’s navigation of app: Map • Clicks through the pins on the map to view quick details on the wrecks • Opens further details on interesting wrecks from the map popup • What she won’t use unless she has to: search bar; help • “The details of the ship are irrelevant now that its sunk – what matters is the adventure it brings”

  6. Use Scenario #2: Gordon

  7. Gordon’s Musing Mosey • Gordon has been reading quite a lot on trading & war • Has become fascinated with ships lately • Would like to experience historical wrecks himself • Looks for info on ships, finds app, decides to download • Appreciates the map for a moment, but knows the type of ships he would like to search for • Utilizes the search bar to find specific kinds of ships to read on and learns more from there • Also searches for wrecks viewable from the shore to plan a day trip

  8. Gordon: A Walkthrough • Gordon’s navigation of app: Search bar • Gordon searches by the type of ships he is currently interested in, or by ships viewable from the shoreline that he could go and see • Views more details of wrecks from the search results • Is more excited about the details and history of each vessel, not just what it looks like • Is also likely to use: the help feature and all of the ship information on each ship’s page • “Each of these ships had a story, and I can’t wait to learn all about it”

  9. Environments of Use • Research purposes • Planning a trip • General information/curiosity • While visiting the area • Hobbyists

  10. Usability Goals • Ease of use • Intuitive • Informative • Captivating – users want to use it

  11. Concerns & Remedies • Finding a ship when you are uncertain of exact name, only a certain detail, etc. • Solution: Have an “any” feature allowing users to search any column with their query and find all results • Users getting help with the app • Solution: Have the help/FAQs feature, and provide Dr.Casserly’s contact information

  12. Concerns & Remedies • Pictures being too much space • Solution: Compress pictures, or have link to them from the NOAA website • App being used in areas with low/no cell reception • Solution: Store ship information locally so the app does not have to use Wi-Fi or data plans and thus can be used when none is available
