  1. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. - Steve Jobs 2

  2. Hello! I am W.S. Toh I am here because I love to give presentations. 3

  3. 1. Watch Movement

  4. What is watch movement? Very simply, watch movement is the “engine” of the watch – Could be mechanical, electronics, digital, or a combination. It is what drives the watch functions, time and maybe even the calendar; The heart and mechanics of the watch. 5

  5. 2. Mechanical & Automatic Watches

  6. Mechanical Watches Oldest among watch constructs. Invented in 17thcentury. Not run by batteries nor electronics; Electronic technology almost does not exist in 17thcentury. Fully running on mechanical parts. Powered by a mainspring that needs to be wound manually. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ 7

  7. Automatic Watches People later got smarter (and lazier). Automatic watches are “upgraded” mechanical watches. It simply winds the mainspring automatically from the movement of the wearer. This is done so by the clever use of a series of weighted gears and ball bearings. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ 8

  8. Pros & Cons of Mechanical Watches Does not run on batteries! Higher maintenance because of mechanical parts wear-and-tear. Not as accurate as modern watches. May damage the watch from over-winding the spring. 400 yeas old technology – Very mature very safe. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ 9

  9. 3. Quartz Watches

  10. Quartz Watches Invented much later in 1927; Only happened after electronics became widely used. Quartz crystals vibrate a constant number of times when electricity is passed through it. This is used to run the watch, and it is much more precise than mechanical watches. Requires a battery that needs to be replaced every few years. ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ 11

  11. Pros & Cons of Quartz Watches Battery that needs to be replaced. Low maintenance. Much more accurate. ▪ ▪ ▪ 12

  12. 4. Quartz VS Mechanical Watches

  13. Mechanical Quartz Watch Movement Sweeping Clicking Powered By Spring Battery Accuracy Less Precise More Precise Maintenance More maintenance Virtually none More – precision engineering Less – Common quartz crystals and electronics Cost 14

  14. WHICH IS BETTER? Quartz is a better technology, but that does not mean mechanical is bad. Mechanical has its own charm, and it’s all up to you to decide! 15
