  2. Who is a Citizen? • 1. Natural Born - being born inside the boarders of the US or in a US territory or to US citizen parents • 2. Naturalization - The legal process by which a person who was born in another country becomes a citizen.

  3. What is a US Citizen? • One who owes allegiance to the United States. • 90% of US citizens are natural born citizens. • Born in the USA or on an American Embassy or a US territory: Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands

  4. Legal foreigners • Alien – citizen of a foreign country living in the United States • Deportation -Legal process in which aliens are legally required to leave the United States.

Requirements for Naturalization • Be at least 18 years old. • Have lived in the U.S. as a legal resident for at least 5 years. • Be of good moral character and loyal to the U.S. • Be able to read, write, speak and understand basic English. • Have basic knowledge and understanding of the history, government structure and the Constitution of the U.S. • Be willing to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S
