Methods for the promotion of gender equality • Legal basis for gender equality at EU level • Since 1957, the Treaty of the European Community has provided a legal basis for policy and action on gender equality • New Treaty of the European Union: gender equality is "fundamental value" (art.2 TUE) and an objective (art.3TUE) of the EU • The Union is required to promote equality between men and women in all its activities • The EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights provides for equality between women and men and prohibits sex discrimination
