  1. TOS VARNSDORF IN KUNMING Czech-Chinese cooperation

  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH What kinds of products do you know about that are produced solely in the Czech Republic? Do you own any of them? What influences your selection of a product for purchase? Do you think that Czech products are of better quality than foreign ones? Can you give any examples comparing such products? What is your opinion on the quality of Chinese products? Do you have any experience with them? Discuss issues of quality control in manufacturing with your classmates.

  3. WHILE YOU WATCH Exercise 2 Are these statements TRUE or FALSE? • TOS Varnsdorf has Chinese managers. • Chinese companies can freely trade with foreign companies. • The exchange rate between jüan and Czech crown makes things difficult for business. • One of the advantages of the tight control over foreign payments in China is that all of them are sure to be legal. • The quality of TOS production in China is lower than that in the Czech Republic. • TOS has no permanent technical supervisor in Kunming. • TOS started to cooperate with their Chinese partner at a trade fair. • TOS owns the Czech-Chinese joint venture company in Kunming.

  4. Exercise 3 Listen and fill in the gaps • We started our cooperation with initial talks during the fair in Beijing in 2005 and then in 2006 established a joint venture company with a partnership (of) 50% to 50% of shares on our company. The initial investment of TOS Varnsdorf was and we transfer(ed) our know-how in building our machines, these two types, and also some components used and necessary for assembly (of) these machines. • We have permanently our technician in Kunming who cares about the quality of the products. • And also the issue. Due to the fact that the Chinese jüan is not freely tradable, we need…we have to do our business in China in cooperation with our company only in euro(s). Because the Chinese company, if they want to trade in (the) euro, they need to get the (a) from the authy for … • So it’s not the common practice that you just issue an invoice and you got (get) the money from the Chinese customer or partner. If you want to do so, the Chinese partner firstly need(s) to have the and they also need to got (get) the approval from the that the invoice could be paid. • risks in Chinese markets, in China, it’s not a big issue for the Czech companies if you are looking in the fluctuation of the RMB and the Czech crown, but the problem is that we trade in euro. So we try to keep an eye on the exposure of the euro currency, (the) euro exchange risk more than the exchange risk on the Chinese jüan. So from the my perspective, we are solving this problem or heg this issue on a (the) euro… • … the exchange rate of RMB or Chinese jüan is not floating, it’s controlled, it’s rather fix(ed) or fluctuating in a very near (narrow) space…

  5. AFTER YOU WATCH Exercise 4 Match the English expressions with their Czech equivalent

  6. Exercise 5 ROLE PLAY Work in small groups. Imagine you are a team of consultants giving an expert opinion to a government advisory committee about outsourcing jobs from Czech Republic to China. The committee will make recommendations for Czech governmental regulations protecting local jobs. 1. Consider the pros and cons of outsourcing. What are the benefits and what are the disadvantages? What kinds of industries could benefit from outsourcing contracts and what kinds of industries could be hurt? What factors influences these relationships? • Conduct some preliminary research online and through the EU regulatory websites and write a short report where you would summarize your conclusions. Deliver the report to the mock advisory board (your classmates). At the end of the presentations, conduct a group discussion to compare your groups’ ideas with the others.

  7. Exercise 5 REFLECTION Discuss in small groups and present your findings to the whole group • What factors besides profit need to be considered when developing contractual agreements for cross-border business transactions? • What kinds of skills do managers need to have to work more effectively in diverse cultural environments on behalf of a company? • What kind of regulatory controls do you support? What kind of regulatory controls are problematic for you? Why?
