  2. Outline of talk • The Higher Education Academy’s new strategic plan • The future of the Academy Scotland Sounding Board and our relationship with SHED • Recognition and Reward in L and T; capacity-building in reflective practice/ action research…

Academy’s new Strategic Plan- main points raised by the Scottish sector • Vision and mission broadly supported • Concern around duplication, overlap and lack of clarity between the work of the Academy and the QAA, particularly with regard to the Enhancement Themes • A very powerful role of the Academy is to disseminate good practice between the four home countries of the UK • The Academy should emphasise supporting individual academics, supporting subject communities, and bridging QE activities in Scotland and the rest of the UK, recognising the different approach within Scotland. • Clarification of the role of the Academy in Scotland needs all the partners to work together to address • “there is huge potential and strong support for the Academy, provided that its role is clarified” Universities Scotland

Vision Mission Our vision is for students in UK higher education to enjoy the highest quality learning experience in the world Working at multiple levels Providing national leadership As an independent broker Working across the four nations As an effective, open and responsive organisation We support the sector in providing the best possible learning experience for all students We will realise this mission through the following strategic aims Inform, influence and interpret policy Raise the status of teaching Identify, develop and disseminate evidence-informed approaches Broker and encourage the sharing of effective practice Support universities and colleges in bringing about strategic change This is how we operate New strategic plan for 2008-13

Recognition and Reward in HE Learning and Teaching • The Academy’s 5th strategic aim in the new draft strategic plan for 2008-13 is to “Raise the status of teaching” with two strategic objectives: Objective 1 Celebrate good teaching and promote professional standards Objective 2 Encourage the recognition and reward of teaching at institutional level • Opportunities afforded by the Subject Centres: Teaching Awards and L&T Development Funds • Scottish dimension; no NTFS, FDTL, CETLs
