  2. Announcements Quiz Chemical Hazards Radiation Safety Hazard Assessment and PPE Other (non-PPE) Safety Equipment Egress issues, emergencies, UV, & compressed gases. Schedule/Contents

  3. Announcements • Before 5 pm Thursday 6/3 you must complete online reading exercises. (where?) • Sign Attendance sheet, provide email.

  4. Hazards of Chemicals • toxicity • Carcingens • Mutagens • Reproductive toxins • Physical hazards • Flammables, strong oxidizers • Corrosive – strong acid/base • Explosives

  5. Radiation Safety • There was/is a separate training for those who will be using radioisotopes. • For those working near, but not with, radioisotopes, an informative video is available.

  6. Personal Protection • Personal = on your body. • Required or optional? • How do you know when? • How do you know what? • How do you know anything about the available PPE? • (What does PPE mean?)

  7. Hazard Assessment • The process of assessing hazards and prescribing the required PPE • Responsibility of the supervisor • Must post written, dated “Certification of Hazard Assessment” in each work area. • THEN IT IS THE RULES. ...for all PPE and possibly any other precautions included.

  13. Other Safety Equipment • How to use it? • How to tell if it’s working? • Who to tell if it’s not? • How often it must be tested?

  14. Other Safety Equipment • Biosafety cabinets(not all laminar flow cabs are BSCs) • Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens training are not included in todays session. Room air Filtered air Contaminated air

  15. Biological Safety • People involved in rDNA work should complete the “Biological Safety Training” module, see link at REM website training page. • For anyone working with human blood, tissue, cell lines,or body fluids, BBP training is required annually.

  16. Egress • Main corridors – totally clear • Inner walkways – 22 inches • Floor clean, clear • Doors/doorways – taping the flooris popular to help with this.

  17. EMERGENCIES • Call 911. • Better to err on the side of caution. • When the evacuation alarms sounds….evacuate. • “Shelter in place” • Emergency procedures booklet – read it now, there is not time to cram during the emergency.

  18. Ultraviolet radiation • Skin damage • EYES especially….. • Biosafety cabinets • Common lab sources: • Transilluminator boxes • Crosslinkers • UV lasers

  19. Gas Cylinder Safety(high P, approx 2500 psi, not cryogens) • Secure tank above center of gravity…. • Cap while in transit and not in use. • Uncapped cylinder to be supported individually. • Move only with proper cylinder cart.

  20. Gas delivery from cylinders • ALWAYS use a regulator. • And use the right regulator. • Know how to make gas tight high pressure fittings, or know where to find out how.
