  5. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM The Heart

  6. Heart (the pump) • 1 organ • 2 functions, 2 sides, 2 pumps • 1) Pumps venous blood to the lungs • 2) Pumps arterial blood to the cells

  7. Heart Structure • 4 Chambers LEFT ATRIUM LEFT VENTRICLE RIGHT ATRIUM RIGHT VENTRICLE

  8. Blood Pathway Blood enters the Left Atrium from the pulmonary veins Pulmonary Veins – Blood from lungs LEFT ATRIUM

  9. Blood Pathway • Chambers open and close, pushing blood. • When the atrium contracts, blood is pushed to the ventricle.

  10. Blood Pathway • The left ventricle is the largest chamber. • It pumps blood to the whole body when it contracts. Aorta – blood to body LEFT VENTRICLE

  11. Blood Pathway • Once the blood has circulated through the body, it returns to the heart • From upper veins: superior vena cava • From lower veins: inferior vena cava Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vena Cava

  12. Blood Pathway • Blood enters the RIGHT ATRIUM from these veins • Then it is pushed to the RIGHT VENTRICLE RIGHT ATRIUM RIGHT VENTRICLE

  13. Blood Pathway Pulmonary Arteries • The Right ventricle contracts • Blood is pushed through the PULMONARY ARTERY towards the lungs, where it picks up O2 • It then returns to the heart through the pulmonary vein RIGHT ATRIUM RIGHT VENTRICLE

  14. Systemic Circulation – through the body • Left Ventricle • Aorta (an artery) • Arteries • Arterioles • Capillaries (diffusion of gases, nutrients, waste collected) • Venules • Veins (Inferior or superior vena cava) • Right Atrium

  15. Pulmonary Circulation – (lungs) • Right ventricle • Pulmonary Artery • Capillaries of the lungs (surround alveoli – diffusion of gases) • Pulmonary vein • Left Atrium
