Introduction-1 • In V14, Paul says do all things without complaining (KJV- murmuring) and disputing • Complaining suggests an ongoing pattern of behavior • He does not restrict complaining to spiritual matters, although that is the context, and they are most important • The complaining identified here is more than a bad habit • It is a very common sin • A sin that has been and still is a problem for God’s people
Introduction-2 • The word used here is gongusmos • Which means a muttering about something or someone • Translated grumbling in I Pet. 4:9 • Usually in an indirect and secretive way • A common way of reacting when things don’t go as we expect or want them to • Let us consider some things about this common sin and how we may avoid it
Examples of Complaining-1 • The Israelites complained (murmured) in the wilderness- I Cor. 10:10 • They complained about a lack of water- Ex. 15:24 • They complained about a lack of food- Ex. 16:2-3 • Even accused Moses and Aaron of leading them into the wilderness to kill them with hunger- V3 • They complained about the manna God gave them- Num. 11:4 • God killed many of them for their complaining- Num. 21:6
Examples of Complaining-2 • Their complaining serves as an example and a warning for us today- I Cor. 10:11 • The scribes and Pharisees complained about Jesus’ eating with the publicans and sinners- Lk. 15:2 • Jesus responded with three parables about lost things showing the value one lost soul • Jesus’ disciples complained about His hard teaching- Jn. 6:61 • And many left Him because of it- V66
Examples of Complaining-3 4. The Hellenists complained that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food- Acts 6:1 • Evidently their complaint was true, and the situation was corrected • But their complaining was the wrong response to their condition 5. False teachers are often complainers- Jude 16 • They are apt to be dissatisfied because they are motivated by their own selfish desires rather than rather than God’s word
The Nature of Complaining-1 • Complaining or grumbling shows discontent • We are to learn to be content with what we have- Heb. 13:5 • God is the source of all our blessings- Jas. 1:17 2. Therefore, complaining shows a lack of gratitude for what God has given us and a lack of trust in His promises- Mt. 6:33 • Many complaints are directly or indirectly against God • He hears every one of them
The Nature of Complaining-2 3. Complaining sets a poor example • It makes a christian worldly • Complainers can’t shine as lights in the world- Phil. 2:15 4. Complaining (murmuring) is cowardly • It does not confront the source of one’s displeasure directly as Jesus teaches- Mt. 18:15 5. Complaining, like worrying, does not help our situation
Avoiding Complaining • We need to remember that complaining (murmuring) is sinful • We need to focus on the many blessings that we have rather than what we want that we don’t have • We need to learn to be content with our condition- Phil 4:11 • We need to pray for any desired improvement- Phil. 4:6-7 • And patiently trust the Lord to provide what is best for us and for His cause 5. We need to do what we can do to gain that improvement
In Conclusion • Complaining or murmuring is a common sin in the world • The scriptures show that it has been and remains a common sin among God’s people • We can’t be the lights in the world that God want us to be if we are complainers • Counting our blessings, prayer and trusting in God will help us avoid complaining • What is your condition this morning?
