About NOVICE 1 • Two Programs: Nov1-Ls (Listening) & Nov1-Rd (Reading). • Four Levels: • Level 1: The Face, People/Body Parts, Colors, Fruits • Level 2: Shapes, On the farm, At the Zoo, My Family • Level 3: Counting from 0 to 10, Outdoors, At School, In the Bathroom • Level 4: Nature, Common Expressions, Listen and Do See the appendix.
Installing Novice 1 • Insert the CDROM • Open the Novice 1 folder by using Windows Explorer • Run the Setup.exe • Specify the destination directory • (e.g: c:/ or d:/) • Select: Full – Install all files.
Using NOVICE 1: • Run theNOV1-Ls.exe or Nov1-Rd.exe. • Type your name and press ENTER. • See the report book (if any) and click the “Continue” button. • Select one level from the pull-down menu. • Answer the qestions.
About ATM: • ATM: VIBE, SIBE, RIBE, LIBE. Since 1987. • VIBE: A dissertation project: “Developing and Validating Computer-Based Vocabulary-Size Test” (2007) • VIBE: Vocabulary-Item Bank of English: • ± 2000 High Frequency Words (from GSL1) • 570 Academic Words (from AWL) • See Fun With High Frequency Words (2nd ed.) • Various objective test format: MC, T/F, Y/N, matching, cloze, Fill-in, scrambled letters. • File types: text, pictures, audio, video(?). • For children – adults.
Installing ATM • Insert the CDROM • Open the ATM_UNIB folder • Run the Setup.exe • Specify the destination directory • (i.e: c:/ or d:/) • Select: Full – Install all files.
Using ATM • Run the ATM.EXE • Type your name and press ENTER • Click the “Continue” button • Select one/more topic(s), e.g.: • 1 -10 (demo files) • Press ENTER to continue • Modify the available options or just press ENTER to continue • Answer the qestions. • To create CBT: Press Ctrl+1 • To edit CBT: Press Ctrl+2
Session 2: Creating CB Exercises • Two Approaches: Vertical and Horizontal • Guidelines: • 1 question = 11 lines/columns • Follow the correct sequence • Save as Plain Text file (xxxx.txt) • VIBE: (x)x.txt (e.g. 12.txt) • SIBE: 91xx.txt (e.g. 9101.txt) • RIBE: 82xx.txt (e.g. 8201.txt) • LIBE: 34xx.txt (e.g. 3401.txt) • Save in Besmart/Research folder • Check the four guidelines above if your CB Exercises don’t work.
Hands-on activities (1) • Vertical Approach • Type the given text using Microsoft Word • Save it as a Plain Text file (e.g. 99.txt) • Save it in the Besmart/Research folder • Run ATM to try it out.
Hands-on activities (2) • Vertical Approach • Open the ATM_Maker_Exercises.xls file. • Select a test format from the available sheets • Copy the text • Paste it in the Notepad • Save it as a Plain Text file (e.g. 99.txt) • Save it in the Besmart/Research folder • Run ATM to try it out.
Hands-on activities (3) • Horizontal Approach • Open the CALL.doc file • Select/copy one paragraph • Paste it a new word document • Break it down into sentences • Open the Maker.xls file. • Paste the sentences into the data sheet • Type the expected answers and their clues • Select a test format from the available sheets • Copy the text(s) • Paste it in the Notepad • Save it as a Plain Text file (e.g. 99.txt) • Save it in the Besmart/Research folder • Run ATM to try it out.
