  3. VALEDITORIAN SELECTION • School Board tweaked policy for class of ’12: • 35% GPA • 35% Strength of Schedule • 30% ACT

GRAD W/ DISTINCTION • 3.0 + one of the following: • Earn a nationally recognized industry certification • Participate in Governor’s School • Participate in All State Music Organization • Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-finalist • Attain a 31 or higher composite score on ACT • Earn 12 or more hours of college credit

  5. GRAD W/ HONORS • Students who score at or above all of the ACT readiness benchmarks listed below will graduate with honors • English – 18 • Math – 22 • Reading – 21 • Science - 24

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO... • Email Account – Communication, Scholarship opportunities, etc • Facebook – ‘Like’ ACHS School Counseling to get info in your newsfeed • Text Alerts – Sign up for phone notifications (see p. 37) • Get Organized – Calendar, file, timeline (see p.4-5 and Website for ideas) • Resume – Senior book has ideas (p.6)

  9. RECOMMENDATION LETTERS • Complete the Senior Information Sheet (p. 7-8) and Teacher Evaluation Sheet (p. 9-10) – YOU CAN DO THIS NOW! • Provide copy of resume • Provide Address, Stamped Envelope • Allow 2 weeks!!! (+ mail time) Counselor Rec – Steps 1-4 Teacher Rec – Steps 2-4

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO... • ACT – must register online (FEW paper packets available in guidance) • WHAT SCORE DO YOU NEED? • 19 – Enroll at RSCC with no remedial classes • 27 – average at UTK • 19 – 24 – mid 50% at ETSU • 30 – 34 – mid 50% at Vanderbilt • RETAKE – Oct 27 or Dec 8 • Sign up by Sept 21 for Oct test

  11. NOW? WHAT SHOULD YOU DO... NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE • You MUST register to play Div I or II • Cost is approx $75 – if you are on fee wavier see your counselor • Must request a transcript • Must send ACT/SAT scores directly www.eligibilitycenter.org

  14. ADMISSIONS • OPEN ADMISSION:Everyone accepted—Deadline for Scholarship consideration only (Ex: Roane State, Tn Technology Centers)Placement tests required… • ROLLING ADMISSION:Students are continually admitted using minimum course requirements, GPA & ACT (Ex: UTC, ETSU, TN TECH…)

  15. COMPETITIVE:Admission factors can include Application, GPA, ACT , Personal Statements, Essay, Recommendations… NOTE:UTK is in this category. It is recommended that if you do not have the average admission scores (27 on the ACT and a 3.9 GPA) that you complete a personal statement and letters of recommendation (by Nov. 1)

  16. UTK & other competitive colleges use a “holistic review” to help choose the most qualified freshman class. Less qualified students are denied or waitlisted. • HIGHLY SELECTIVE:Deadline for Application & Scholarships… Applications include essays & recommendations and often involve a 2-part applications process. Even highly qualified applicants are often denied or waitlisted. EX: Vanderbilt, Duke…

  17. HINT: If you are SUREyou want to attend a particular highly competitive university, you may want to consider applying by the Early Admissions Deadline. IF YOU APPLYEARLY ADMISSIONSYOU ARE COMMITING TO ATTEND THIS SCHOOL IF YOU GET ADMITTED.
