  2. RIFLES

  3. Garand Rifle • It was the standard U.S. rifle issued in the war. • Invented by John Garand. • First semiautomatic used in combat. • By the end of the war over 4 million were produced. • Reliable: easy to disassemble and clean. • It fired at a muzzle velocity of 2,800 feet per second and it has a range of 600 yards.

  4. Gewehr 43 • The performance fell short compared to the Gerand. • Improved upon earlier German attempts at gas powered rifles. • It had a muzzle velocity of 2,445 feet per second and a range of 600 yards.

  5. Machine Guns

  6. .30 Caliber • Improvement over water cooled machine guns. • The m1917 was converted to an air-cooled model. • Surrounded the barrel with many holes. • It was used as more of an offensive weapon than the water-cooled guns. • It fired at 400 to 550 rounds per minute and its range was 1,100 yards.

  7. The MG-42 • One of the best light machine guns ever made… variants of this gun are still used today. • Has an astounded rate of fire – 1,200 rounds per minute. • Sounded like “ripping canvas.” • Very easy to disassemble and carry… it only weighed 25.3 pounds.

  8. Hand Grenades

  9. Mark II Fragmentation Grenade • Primary hand grenade of American GIs. • It was constructed of cast iron and was egg shaped. • The outside was serrated so more fragments were produced. • The killing radius was 5 to 10 yards but fragments from the grenade could kill up to 50 yards.

  10. Stielhandgranate • Seen widespread use in World War I. • It was a thin sheet metal can with a TNT charge mounted on a hollow wooden shaft to provide leverage. • To arm it one would unscrew the cap at the top to expose a bead. • Pulling the bead activated the grenade.

  11. Mortars

  12. 81-mm Mortar • Invented by Sir Frederick Wilfrid Scott Stokes. • It consisted on a narrow tube that rested on a base plate to dissipate the recoil. • A bipod supported the front and adjusted the elevation. • It had a range of 3,290 yards.

  13. Kurzer Granatenwerfer 42 • Very destructive. • Had a smaller range then the American model because it weighed less. • Mortars were ideal for artillery support. • Used especially in the hedgerow campaigns in France to push the Americans back.

  14. TANKS

  15. Sherman Tank • The primary Tank of the Allied armies. • It was inferior to the German Panzer because of its high profile, thin armor, and weak main gun. • Were very easily destroyed by German grenades, rockets, and shells. • Shells fired from the gun actually bounced off of German panzers. • This tank was upgraded as the war progressed with more armor and more firepower, but was still inferior to the German Panzer.

  16. Panzer V • The best tank during World War II. • Had excellent armor and firepower. • It had a great suspension and chassis to allow it to travel over any terrain. • In open country the Sherman was no match for the Panzer.

  17. Rocket Launchers

  18. Bazooka • Invented by Leslie Skinner and Edward Uhl. • The U.S. wanted a competent weapon to stop a tank. • It weighed only 18 pounds and it had a range of 500 yards.

  19. Panzerschreck • The Germans captured an American bazooka in Russia and copied the design. • An 88 mm rocket was inserted in the rear end of the tube and pressing the trigger fired it. • It had a range of 130 yards, which was inferior to the American bazooka.

  20. Conclusion German weapons were better then the Allied weaponry because of superior firepower, better armor, and all around better design.
