  3. Journey/quest/tasks(events) • Killed his wife • Got back Admetus’s wife back from Hades • Cousin –Eurystheus, assigned the 12 labors

  4. 12 Tasks The first task was to kill the Lion of Nenea The second Labor was to go to Lerna and kill a creature with nine heads The third labor was to bring back alive a stag with Horns of gold The fourth labor was to capture a great boar The fifth labor was to clean the Augen stables in a single day The sixth labor was to defeat the stymphalian bird, he had the goddess intervention of Athena to do this The seventh labor was to capture the Cretan bull The eighth labor was to steal the mares of Diomedes

Journey/quest/tasks(events) • -the ninth labor was to bring back the girdle of Hippolyta • The tenth labor was to capture the cattle of Geryon • The eleventh labor was to steal apples from the garden of Hesperides • The twelth labor was to capture cerberus from the underworld • After the 12 labors hercules traveled with the argonauts to find the golden fleece

Motifs and themes • Guilt and redemption – Hercules is ridden with guilt for killing his wife and kids so he completes the 9 trials to forgive himself • - Hercules feels guilty about behaving so inappropriately after a funeral so he rescues the wife of Admetusfrom the underworld • Pride goes before fall- one time Hercules refuses to see the error of his ways and his wife poisons his robe, causing him to kill himself and escape the agony the potion causes

  7. Story summation • Hercules overcame his guilt by working hard and punishing himself with daunting tasks but in the end he had no regret for his wrongdoings which led his wife to poison his robe, thus forcing him to kill himself. Hercules learns to see the error of his ways.

  8. Lessons or cultural values in story The Greeks values: • Strength • A remorseful spirit when wrong actions • A humble attitude • Women cannot do much about an unfaithful husband or they will be considered as an unfaithful wife. This is exhibited in Hera who takes revenge not on her cheating husband, but on the child that was born from his affair Lessons: • Don’t let pride be your downfall • Accept responsibility for your actions
