What is Discoverer Plus? • Oracle’s Discoverer Plus report writing tool that provides access to the College’s data in the Operational Data Store (ODS). • Provides ability to create formatted reports in a easy to use online graphical user interface. • Allows you to generate data sets or lists for export into Excel or Access.
What is a Operational Data Store? • The Operational Data Store (ODS) is a database that stores the College’s data in a central location for reporting. • Allows for integration of data from different systems. • The data in the ODS is refreshed nightly. More on the ODS… • The data you will be accessing is stored in views. • A view is a collection of data elements from various tables. • Information Systems develops these views based on end user requirements and publishes them to a Business Area. • In Discoverer these views will appears as folders in a Business Area. • Descriptions of the views, also called Metadata, can be found in the ODS dictionary.
Discoverer Plus Components End User layer Business area Workbooks Worksheets
End User Layer (EUL) • The EUL is a collection of Business Areas and allows for connectivity between the Discoverer Plus and the ODS. • Information Systems creates and defines the EUL’s based on end user requirements.
Business Areas (BA) • A Business Area is a collection of ODS data stored in views and assigned to a EUL. • Information Systems creates and defines the BA’s based on end user requirements. • Security on a BA is defined by a role. You will request access based on these roles.
Workbooks & Worksheets • Workbooks are Discoverer Plus files that contain worksheets displaying data retrieved from the ODS. If you are familiar with spreadsheet applications (e.g. Microsoft Excel), think of a workbook as a spreadsheet file. • Worksheets contain the data that you want to analyze, together with a number of Discoverer Plus tools to help you analyze the data.
Workbooks & Worksheets • Create standard reports for your department and share them. • Create graphical charts and graphs of the data. • Data in Workbooks/Worksheets can be: • Viewed on the screen, printed, saved, shared, and e-mailed or exported to Microsoft Access or Excel.
ODS/Discoverer Access • In order to use ODS and/or Discoverer Plus you will need an ODS account. • Complete the online Access Form and Application for ODS and Discoverer Plus. • The application link is located under the documentation section of the Discoverer Home Page.
Access or Excel • If you have an ODBC (open database connectivity) connection on your computer and an ODS account, then you can access ODS data and either link or import data down into Access or Excel. • The end-user should be knowledgeable in Access or Excel in order to access and use the ODS data.
