  2. Objectives • Be able to identify the 7 continents on a map. • Be able to properly locate the world’s oceans. • Be able to find the following countries on the world map: • United States • Britain • France • Germany • Japan • Russia • Italy • China • Iraq

  3. Basics Review • Compass - used to tell the direction (north, south, east or west). • Legend -A key to symbolism used on a map. • Longitude – Measures distance from north to south • Latitude – Measures distance from east to west

  4. THE Five OCEANS • Arctic Ocean • Atlantic Ocean • Indian Ocean • Pacific Ocean • Southern Ocean Equator

  5. What are the seven continents? • Antarctica • Africa • Asia • Australia • Europe • North America • South America

  6. Antarctica • The southernmost continent • The coldest, driest, and windiest continent • The highest average elevation of all the continents.

  7. Africa • Second largest continent in terms of area and population. • Numerous climate zones. • Thought to be the region of human origins.

  8. Asia • The world’s largest continent in both area and population. • Diversity can be seen throughout the continent

  9. Australia • The only country that is its own continent. • Has one of the worlds largest economies.

  10. Europe • The second smallest of the continents • Third largest in population • Home to both World Wars

  11. North America • Third largest continent in term of area • Has the worlds 4th largest population • 3 most spoken languages: English, French, Spanish

  12. South America • Considered to be the subcontinent of the Americas • 4th largest in terms of area • 5th largest in terms of population
