  1. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing The context • LEIT (ICT7 + ICT8): Cloudstrategy • - Cloud R&I: Heterogeneous cloud infrastructures, federated cloud networking; cloud innovation platforms; - PCP for public sector cloud computing services; PPI for cloud computing solutions. Excellent Science: HPC Strategy • - Computer Science: towards exascale High Performance Computing (FET); • - Providing access to the best supercomputing facilities and services for both industry and academia (PRACE); • - Achieving excellence in HPC applications (FET + Research Infrastructure). LEIT (ICT4): Customised and low power computing systems Next generation computing systems: scalable micro-servers ("data-centres in the box") Programming approaches for the computing continuum: productivity, multi-parameter optimisation Platform-building for problems with real-time constraints; application experiments in cyber-physical systems LEIT: ECSEL joint undertaking Components Next generation micro processors/ controllers, System-on-Chip, processor architectures Societal Challenges: Applications Health, food, energy, transport, climate, inclusion/innovation, security LEIT = LEadership in Industrial Technologies

ICT4 - Customised and low power computing The context Examples • LEIT (ICT7 + ICT8): Cloudstrategy • - Cloud R&I: Heterogeneous cloud infrastructures, federated cloud networking; cloud innovation platforms; - PCP for public sector cloud computing services; PPI for cloud computing solutions. 3. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing • Computing is changing (again): embedded ICT and cyber-physical systems are everywhere; demand for low-power and high-performance computing is growing; a new "computing continuum" is emerging.Three trends are common across many market segments: Energy efficiency Mixed criticality systems and applications Multi core andparallel architectures

  4. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing • What we ask for (1) • Servers, micro-server and highly parallel embedded computing systems based on ultra-low power architectures • Integration of HW and SW into working prototypes • Low-power, low-cost, high-density, secure, reliable, scalable • Cross-layer programming approachesto exploit the full potential of heterogeneous parallel architectures • Multi-dimensional optimisation (performance, energy, response time…) • Programming approach per application class, easy for programmers • Scalable market approach

  5. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing • What we ask for (1) • Servers, micro-server and highly parallel embedded computing systems based on ultra-low power architectures • Integration of HW and SW into working prototypes • Low-power, low-cost, high-density, secure, reliable, scalable • Cross-layer programming approachesto exploit the full potential of heterogeneous parallel architectures • Multi-dimensional optimisation (performance, energy, response time…) • Programming approach per application class, easy for programmers • Scalable market approach A good start: EUROSERVER project (FP7) New low-power architecture Reuse energy-efficient components in a micro-server solution High-performance, scalable from embedded to cloud BUT: focused on hardware for H2020 we need integration across all layers (HW & SW)

  6. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing • What we ask for (2) • Reference architectures and platformsacross several sectors and application domains • Use-case driven • Industrial consensus building, pre-normative activities, reference implementations, proof-of concept demonstrations and validation in key application domains • Small proposals • Application experiments bringing together all actors along the value chain • experiments clustered in large scale projects driven by networks of European centres of excellence • Open calls • Large proposals

  7. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing • What we ask for (2) • Reference architectures and platformsacross several sectors and application domains. • Use-case driven • Industrial consensus building, pre-normative activities, reference implementations, proof-of concept demonstrations and validation in key application domains • Small proposals • Application experiments bringing together all actors along the value chain • experiments clustered in large scale projects driven by networks of European centres of excellence • Open calls • Large proposals A good example: I4MS (ICT for Manufacturing SMEs) Helping high-tech and innovative SMEs to profit from advances in ICT "In total about 200 SMEs will take part in I4MS with more than 150 innovation experiments over the next 3 years" Need a similar initiative for customised and low-power computing

  8. ICT4 - Customised and low power computing We do NOT want: Proposals with no industrial or innovation aspects. Proposals without prototypes, applications or experiments. • Yes, but what's new? • Embedded systems have evolved into cyber-physical systems (connected) • Wide availability of multi-core and the end of Moore's law • Optimisation is now multi-dimensional: energy, performance, response time, security… (more non-functional requirements) • HPC remains a different market, but now "embedded HPC" is emerging • Programmers don’t have to bespecialists in parallel algorithms Who are the leading players? System integrators (Bull, Eurotech, Ericsson, IBM, Thales) Hardware (ST-Microelectronics, ARM, Infineon, Intel) Research (Barcelona Supercomputing Center, FORTH, Fraunhofer, INRIA, POLIMI, UNI-Stuttgart, TU-Wien) Industrial users (Airbus, Comau, EDF, Philips) …and many others (including many innovative SMEs)
