  2. What is IQ? • There are two types of intelligence: fluid and crystalized. • Crystalized Intelligence is the ability to use skills, knowledge, and experience i.e. knowing how to ride a bike. • Fluid Intelligence is the capacity to think logically and solve problems in new situations, independent of crystalized intelligencei.e. my bike is stuck in a tree, how do I get it down using only a few items? • Both types of Intelligence are used to determine IQ.

  3. What is the Professor Layton series? • Professor Layton and the curious village is a puzzle adventure game. • Players are given the central storyline and to continue the storyline, players must solve puzzles and brainteasers. • There are 6 games in the series and 1 movie.

  4. Example Puzzle • Ten candles stand burning in a dining room. A strong breeze blows in through an open window and extinguishes two of them. Checking back in on the candles later, you see that one more candle has gone out, you shut the window.Assuming the wind doesn't extinguish any more candles, how many candles do you have left in the end?

  5. The solution! • Did you guess seven or ten? If you did, you are incorrect. The correct answer is three. This puzzle is tricky because of the wording. The key is the phrase “in the end”. Three candles were extinguished; if the rest kept burning they would eventually burn to nothing. When they do, you only have the three candles that weren’t given a chance to burn away!

  6. Hypothesis • Null Hypothesis- Playing through Professor Layton and the Curious Village will have no effect on the subjects’ and iq. • Alternative Hypothesis- Playing through Professor Layton and the Curious Village will have an effect on subjects’ and iq.

  7. My Experiment • I will use 10subjects in my experiment. • Subjects and controls will be given an iq test. • Subjects will then play through the game. I am giving them at least 1 month to complete this game. • Subjects will be given another fluid intelligence test and iq test to see if there is any difference. • Controls will be given the IQ test. They will wait 1 month then take a follow up test.

  8. Results So Far • 7Subjects tested so far: 3 controls and 4 game-played. • Research is ongoing. Expected to be over by March or April. • Preliminary Data shows that the controls had an increase of 6.5 points. • The group that has played the game had an increase of 13 points.

  9. Results cont. • Observations: Questions from the IQ test are similar to puzzles offered in Professor Layton and the Curious Village. • Example IQ test question observed: Rearrange the following letters into a word. PSRAI. What type of thing is the word?(A) Vegetable (B) City (C) Animal (D) Rock (E) Country
