Questions & Answers • Why are MSDS’s and CIL’s issued? • This is the method used by the manufacturer of a chemical substance to provide information about the product to the user • What is a Material Safety Data Sheet? • This is the method used by the manufacturer of a chemical substance to provide information about the product to the user • What is a Chemical Inventory List (CIL)? • This is a list of potentially hazardous chemical substances found in a given location. CIL for University Mailing Services includes list of potentially hazardous chemicals used and stored • Where are University Mailing Services MSDS’s and CIL’s kept? • They are kept in a black loose leaf notebook clearly labeled “MSDS”. The notebook is kept in the front office on the supplies desk • What is an Employee Exposure Report (EER)? • This is a report that records the unsafe exposure of any employee to a chemical on the CIL. An exposure is contact with a chemical without required safety equipment • How do I fill out an EER? • Fill in the blanks within 24 hours of the exposure. The EER is retained by the OSU Safety Department for at least 40 years. You may refer to the report during the storage time University Mailing Services

The following answer will be answered in the following format: • Information found on MSDS Sheet e.g. Sample: “Rinse Free Stripper” The following points will follow the above format and the example is specifically for “Rinse Free Stripper” University Mailing Services

  7. Questions & Answers • What information does a MSDS give? • Any Health Hazards (Acute or Chronic Effects) e.g. Rinse Free Stripper may cause skin and eye irritation. Avoid prolonged skin contact and inhalation of mist vapors • Exposure Limits e.g. “Not Established”, “Avoid Prolonged Contact” • First Aid Procedures e.g. “Flush eyes or skin for at least 15 minutes with plenty of water. If irritation persists, call a physician. If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately by giving two glasses of water and sticking finger down throat. Method of Instruction • When is “Right to Know” training required? • At initial assignment to the job • Whenever new hazards are introduced (Higher hazard level substance) • Annual Review • What must the training cover? • Methods to detect presence of release • Physical and health hazards present • Measures for personal protection • The details of the company plan • Of what must the employee be informed? • The requirements of the “Right to Know” regulations • Any operations in their area where hazardous chemicals are used • The location and availability of the MSDS plan University Mailing Services

  14. Labeling • What is the OSU (HMIS) System for labeling hazardous materials? • It is a rectangular label attached to the substance or to the storage area immediately adjacent to the materials. It gives six facts about the subject. It tells you what your exposure risk is and what precautions you should take University Mailing Services

Labeling • What is the OSU (NFPA) System for labeling hazardous materials and where is it used? • This is the diamond sign at the entrance to a building used to tell emergency crews such as police and fire what hazardous substance may be encountered. • The diamond has four colors. The chart indicates what the hazard level is. The highest risk level of any substance in the building is indicated on the sign University Mailing Services
