Things you need to know • Ralph – oldest/biggest boy on the island, natural leader, gets elected the leader • Jack – similar to Ralph but loses the election and is angry • Conch Shell – Major symbol in the book, used as a horn to gather everyone and whoever holds the conch shell is the only one allowed to speak
#1) Common Goals • During the chaos Ralph decided to use the conch shell to organize the group • It was just a conch shell but it worked because the group believed in it and had common goals • In order for any group to be successful each member must communicate well and commit to the groups common goalsGOAL = ORGANIZE + SURVIVE
#2) Reaching Consensus • Ralph was committed to reaching consensus • Page 22 – “Let’s have a vote.” – Ralph • Gave one of the younger/quieter boys the conch so he could speak to the group • In order to be a great leader and reach consensus you need to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions
#3) Tuckman’s Theory • The group was forming in the beginning when they first met • They established some ground rules and were heading into the right direction • Then went into storming as soon as small issues occurred • Stayed in storming the entire book and even regressed at the end
#4) Dangers of subgroups Ralph Jack • Voted leader • Order • Civilized • Productive • Build huts and try to get rescued • Not voted leader • Desires power • Strong willed • Savage • Violence • Hunting Competition between leaders = Formation of sub-groups and team cohesiveness falling apart
#5) Task Roles • Ralph = Procedure Developer – Organizer Coordinator –Clarifies and integrates ideas • Jack = Blocker – Interferes with progressAggressor – Bullies and criticizes other boys • Piggy = Follower – Goes along with Ralph • Simon = Clarifier – provides reason between both parties (Jack & Ralph)
