What is Ballistics? Ballistics is the study of flight, behaviour and mechanics of projectiles, mainly focusing on bullets, bombs, missiles etc. There are multiple categories of ballistics but there is 4 major ones: Internal ballistics, Transition ballistics, External ballistics and Terminal Ballistics they are all linked to Crime scene Investigations when the crime involves projectile(s).
Internal Ballistics Internal Ballistics one of the subfields of Ballistics it focuses on the behaviour of the projectile from the time it leaves the propeller: Gun, rocket launcher or a person throwing a projectile. Internal Ballistics also focuses on every aspect of the propeller. Eg,Gun: Internal ballistics would study the propellent(s), Muzzle, Chamber and other aspects of a gun.
Transitional Ballistics Transitional Ballistics focuses on the time from when the projectile leaves the propeller until it stops, Transitional Ballistics studies on the exit of the gun, eg: the propellant gases combusting propelling the projectile in any direction depending on the propeller. Transitional Ballistics also studies suppression of the blast using sound suppressors and flash suppressors, these are mostly used when the killer does not want to be heard or seen as easily.
External Ballistics External Ballistics focuses on the behaviour or the projectile after it has left the barrel and before it hits the victim/object. External Ballistics targets on the variables interfering with the projectile… gravity, wind and air resistance, this area of Ballistics mainly focuses on missiles and heavy artillery but can focus on bullets and arrows. This field of Ballistics uses graphs and charts to measure the trajectory of the projectiles.
Terminal Ballistics Terminal Ballistics focuses on when the projectile hits the victim/target and what the effect on it is, Terminal Ballistics focuses on all sorts of projectiles big and small
