  3. Childhood • When he was ten, he worked as a draw boy • When his father died, he inherited two looms

  4. Joseph-Marie Jacquard’s Past Jobs • He didn’t prosper in the looming business then had to become a Lime burner, which is a person who makes lime by heating up limestone and shells. • His wife helped supported by weaving strawstogether for money Lime Stone

  5. Being a Lime Burner • Being a lime burner wasn’t safe, nor healthy for people • It required a person to watch over chalks or oyster shells until they gave off toxic carbon monoxide, which can cause dizziness, mental confusion, severe headaches, nausea, and fainting if inhaled too much

  6. Jacquard’s Loom • Jacquard was a silk weaver and inventor • Invented the 1st programmable device which is a loom • It used punch cards to help operate it • Punch cards would go into loom and find the pattern to make textiles • Invented in 1801

  9. Significance • The loom made it easier for mass production • Faster and more mass production= cheaper • Then most everybody can afford a textiles
