Chisholm’s ESL Framework Learning Plans/Portfolios • Version 3 of ESL Framework was received in April, 2007 – triggered discussion about importing CGEA units • CGEA units imported include: VBQU105 VBQU117 VBQU130 VBQU144 • Implementation of Learning Plans began in Semester 2, 2007 • This process “formalised” what we have been doing for years as ESL teachers
CERTIFICATE I - ACCESS VBQU105 Develop a learning plan and portfolio with support • This unit assists learners to identify current skills and plan for future skills development with support. • A focal point is on “Learning to Learn” in a classroom setting and how to access support for their everyday needs: Organising their folders Using a dictionary/glossary Using correct grammar & punctuation Revising corrected work • Students concentrate on study and life goals, skills they need to improve, barriers to learning • Worksheets include completing tick the box questionnaires, answering simple questions
Certificate II AccessVBQU117 – Develop & document a learning plan & portfolio with guidance • This unit assists to identify & document current skills & future development with guidance (teacher, advisor) • It focuses on meeting the needs of students with personal, learning, employment & community participation goals • Students complete and assignment with guided questions consisting of: A summary of short & long term goals A skills & knowledge questionnaire An educational & training skills questionnaire An inventory of resources required
Certificate III Access, Employment, Further StudyVBQU 130 – Develop & Document a learning plan & portfolio • Learners needs & expectations focus on objectives such as: Improved language skills new skills & knowledge Employability skills & career advancement Information & advice on courses, learning programs, qualifications & assessment • Students at this level complete an assignment over the term: Identifying goals Clarifying factors impacting on their learning Documenting an individual learning plan Preparing a portfolio of work related to their future direction Evaluating the Learning Plan Portfolio *Students must have access to career advisors, student services officers, community representatives, government officers in specialist support services *ESL Career Week – resumes, interview skills, advice
Certificate IV – Access, Employment, Further Study, ProfessionalsVBQU 42– Research pathways & produce a learning plan & portfolio • Learners must identify a range of future direction options either for study, employment, industry qualifications or community participation • The Unit focuses on: Self awareness tertiary study/work awareness decision making taking action • Students complete a detailed report on: understanding their own learner type employability skills audit how to choose a career researching career websites
New UnitsVPAU487 Develop a language learning plan with supportVPAU501 Plan language learning with support VPAU487 – this unit focuses on orientation to the learning environment and identification of English language and other learning needs. It is designed for learners with little or no formal education. The skills developed are foundation skills for independent learning and planning Documentation is completed with or by a support person as required VPAU501 - similar to VBQU105 (Develop a learning plan & portfolio with support) and includes the skills to develop & maintain a portfolio
