  3. SNL’s Mission: Exceptional Service in the National Interest • National Security Laboratory • Broad mission in developing science and technology applications to meet our rapidly changing, complex national security challenges • Safety, security and reliability of our nation’s nuclear weapon stockpile

  4. Nuclear Weapons • Weapon Life Extension • Neutron Generators • Stockpile Support • Nuclear Materials Protection • Defense Systems and Assessments • Surveillance & Reconnaissance • Integrated Military Systems • Remote Sensing and Verification • Proliferation Assessment • Homeland Security and Defense • Threat Detection & Vulnerability Assessment • Cyber Security • Radiation Sciences • Microsystems & Engineering • Computational Science & Engineering • Energy, Resources, and Nonproliferation • BioEnergy Science • Renewable Energy Science • Nonproliferation

  5. SNL’s Business Context The Stakeholders The Enterprise The Enterprise has ~ 4000Staff using PDMLink and ~ 20,000+ potential candidates The Site SNL has ~ 3000+ candidates for PDMLink use. PDMLink is not the only tool in town. The Group ePRIME has ~ 400 employees using PDMLink today and ~600 licenses available for use Note: PDMLink Potential User Candidates is notional and only seeks to est. relative magnitude.

  6. ePRIME’s PDMLink Deployment Goal Integrate CMII and Software Engineering processes to provide the ePRIME team with the common knowledge to • Efficiently share communication • Coordinate the execution of tasks • Ensure data integrity throughout the product lifecycle • Reliably produce auditable results • Using the minimal amount to tools necessary that meet Stakeholder requirements for deploying PDMLink to our Engineering customers.

  7. ePRIME’s PDMLink Challenges • Adapting PDMLink Administrative Roles into Software Engineering and Configuration Management Standards (e.g. RUP, CMMI, ITIL, CMII, GEIA-649, etc.). Developing and implementing an Administrative Process for the PDMLink solution. . Maintaining End User Role (e.g. Product Mgr, Change Admin, Designer, etc.) and WTObject (e.g. Lifecycles, OIRs, Workflows, Attributes, etc.) configurations. 1 2 3

  11. SNL’s PDMLink Administrative Process Challenges 2

  12. PDMLink Administrative Process Observations • PDMLink does not appear to come with OOTB documentation that defines how to integrate PDMLink Admin Roles into an existing workforce. • SNL has mixed skills and standards support the development and deployment of PDMLink: • Software Engineers from RUP, &/or CMMI, • Hardware System Engineers from INCOSE, • Project Managers from RUP &/or PMBoK, • Configuration Mgrs. from CMII, ISO10007, & GIEA-649, and • Help Desk Staff that may or may not have ITIL experience. The absence of a defined PDMLink Administrative Process has impacted roll-out at SNL.

  13. SNL’s PDMLink Operations Process Line Org. Agreement Service Level Agreement Business Admin SNL has deployed an Administrative Process that articulates how the PDMLink Admin Roles conduct business and manage the PDMLink environment for our Engineering customers. This process is one step above “ad hoc” and is a blend of CMII and Software Engineering practice. This process also blends the use of PDMLink and ClearCase as the bi-directional source of truth. 16. Managing PDMLink with PDMLink SNL is using PDMLink’s Product Structure andChange Management functionality to govern its PDMLink PRODUCTION (PROD) deployment. This approach is helping SNL normalize its PDMLink Admin Roles and Processing to a minimal set responsibilities following the CMII Standard. This approach ensures the PDMLink Admin experience is the End User experience…

  17. SNL’s Value Proposition • SNL believes there is a true opportunity for the OOTB Baseline of PDMLink to be organized as a Product Structure. • Roles, Objects, Policies, Workflows, Lifecycles come fully defined (e.g. ready to go, not simply ready to configure). • PDMLink Admins would manage the Structure via Implementation Activities of the Change Process. • PDMLink Admins would iterate the Codebase files via the various Applet Utilities, xConfmanager Utility, etc. ONLY during the Change Process. • Builds are captured as Managed Baselines &/or End Item Configurations. SNL believes the PDMLink cost of ownership would improve with the full role / process definition –and– a top down configuration control of the solution.

  18. Summary • SNL has expanded PTC’s PDMLink Administrative Framework concept to include the Roles and Responsibilities essential to deploy PDMLink. • SNL has deployed an PDMLink Operations Process that blends Software Engineering and Configuration Management Standards. • SNL is using PDMLink to support the configuration manage of the Windchill solution within a Product Structure. • SNL believes that standardizing PDMLink in a “ready to go” baseline with true CM control is great opportunity to establish support resource levels, improve deployment time, user adoption, and reduce maintenance costs.
