  3. Scenarios & Scanning scenarios scanning *Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat (swotmatrix.com, nd) Scanning is “based on a systematic survey of current newspapers, magazines, Web sites, and other media for indications of changes likely to have future importance.” (WFS, 2004) Scenarios are “the future development of a trend, a strategy, or a wild-card event may be described in story or outline form.” (WFS, 2004) (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 3

  4. TheScenario In order to properly fund the desired outcomes, the school must take a forceful stand on estate planning for the institution. Fund-raising through the development office and alumni must be aggressive, need driven and determined. Fund-raising from all sources must be complete by 2018 and a goal of $3,000,000. The Outcome • Based on these financial benchmarks, the school will be able to roll out the following by 2019: • Creation of a full-time Technology Integration Coach position at the school • Changed graduation requirements so that students no longer take Desktop Publishing as a course and instead have those skills taught to them in every class and discipline by their content teachers. • Smartboard technology available in every classroom complete with training • Training and professional development available for every aspect of technology in the building • 1-2 mobile lab(s) on each floor of the school with 28 laptops included (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 4

  5. Educational Technology Trends Educational technology trends ascertain that “(a) gaming, (b) social networking and Web 2.0 applications, and (c) mobile and handheld computing will continue to gain in popularity and continue to find their way into educational programs at all levels” (Future Trends, 2011, p. 89). I love technology vs. Another emerging trend should also be included in futuring scenarios; the Semantic Web. The video link is a very brief introduction as to what the term Semantic Web means in layman’s terms. It is the correlating work and programming that some futurists say will become an enormous database of connections to help in all facets of educational research. 6. Budgetary & Economic Trends Technology The journal onRe-Examining & Repositioning High Educationdiscusses technology funding in stating that “funding IT was ranked the number one issue for three straight years” (Re-Examine, 2009, p. 11).  The job of funding technology then becomes a front-runner for what an institution spends their tuition and other funding on. Tuition The affordability of higher education continues to be one of the most critical policy issues in the United States” (Re-Examine, 2009, p. 5) TUITION This trend is universal across all school types; without funding, technology will suffer. TECHNOLOGY (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 6

  7. Vision of the Future - 2017 Proper recruitment must continue and be continuously pursued in both local and abroad senses. According to an interview with Jay Henderson “Chinese students are constantly seeking American education at all grade levels” (J. Henderson, personal communication, April 25, 2013). (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 7

  8. Vision of the Future - 2017 • In order for the school to continue to be competitive technologically, they must continue to invest in technology and more importantly, training in the use of that technology for all teachers and staff. • They should look to increase their market share by establishing themselves as a technological front-runner. • Faculty must be trained properly in the use of new technology and the school must be willing to spend their finances on cutting edge technology instead of old and outdated equipment. FF (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 8

  9. Vision of the Future - 2017 As part of their planning, the school should use scanning techniques to monitor not only ongoing trends that are established by technology education authorities, but also what their competition is doing and how they are attracting their clientele. (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 9

  10. 5 Steps Towards a Secure Future Proper recruitment must continue both locally and abroad. The school must seek to establish itself as a front-runner in a technological sense. The school should seek to utilize smart-phone technology and embrace the student’s use of it. Proper training for teachers and staff must be done. Evaluation of not only how effective technology integration has been in teaching, but also in helping to establish the school as the front-runner (Henderson) Vision for Education - 2017 10

  11. A Call to Action The first that could be put into place is already happening at the school in the recruitment and increased marketing presence in both the local and overseas sectors. The second step that could be taken by the school would be the establishment of policies and procedures to allow their students to utilize their smart-phones in a daily class environment.
