    1. Cincinnati Household Travel Survey for the ABJ 40 – New Technologies Subcommittee

    2. History Cincinnati’s last HIS was conducted in 1995 by MORPACE 2010 Model Update – Wanted a new HIS GPS Survey Design chosen due to: Presentation at the 2007 Applications Conference Available funding through ODOT’s SPR

    3. Research We are not obtaining trip purpose, mode, occupancy, or costs directly. Using the Prompted Recall surveys to train Neural Networks to impute the trip purpose and mode. Household vehicle occupancy should be obtained from the total number or GPS devices/child diaries that make a trip.

    4. Research Some costs are being asked in the recruitment survey Free Parking Eligibility Only 600 Prompted Recall Surveys were required to develop and validate the Neural Networks, however, we increased the sample size due to the research nature of this project.

    5. Sample Size 6,500 Households in the 8 County area will be recruited for the GPS Survey to (hopefully) obtain 4,000 Complete Surveys The households will also be asked to complete a 1 day Prompted Recall Survey to obtain 1,500 Complete Prompted Recall Surveys

    6. Monthly Quotas Due to the cost of the GPS devices, the survey will be conducted over 1 year. Monthly quotas will be maintained. 584 recruitments and 387 completes for the GPS Survey 125 completes for the Prompted Recall

    7. Survey Design Strata include: Household Size Workers Vehicle Availability Lifecycle (university student, with children, without children, retired) Income Quartile Transit Accessibility

    8. Sample Frame Address-based sample – Allows to oversample target areas Matching addresses to phone numbers (expected 60%, current 55%) Households with matched phone numbers receive a call within 2 weeks if not completed online Households without a match receive a request to call for a recruitment or complete online 17% are currently completing the recruitment on-line

    9. Survey Materials The recruited households then receive: GPS devices (People 13+) Child diaries (Children under 13) Individual survey forms: work/school address, no travel days Household/Vehicle survey form: 2 most frequented grocery stores, odometer readings

    10. Survey Design Every member of the household aged 13 and over will receive a GPS device Children 12 and under will have a simple child’s diary Place Mode Time Traveled with another Household Member
