Present data products • 800x800 full-disk images, one per minute, continuous (0.87 average duty cycle) • Observables: Doppler velocity, intensity, magnetic field • Merged velocity images • Spherical harmonic time series up to ℓ = 150 • Tracked remapped dense pack data cubes • Global mode parameters on 108-day basis • Ring fit parameters and inversions • Farside images every 12 hours • Near-real time 10-min average magnetograms
GONG data cube for AR10486 Quarter-day averages LOS B Velocity 5-min power
Future data products • Calibrated farside images • High-degree time series and global mode parameters • Merged magnetograms • Custom data cubes • Near-real-time magnetic synoptic maps • Better global and ring parameters • Travel time and difference maps
Future instrumental upgrades • Just completed magnetogram modulator upgrade (June 2006) • Near-real-time data delivery of all data (Farside now running) • Newer, better cameras (but same spatial resolution) (FY2008?) • Image destretching before summation to reduce seeing (not easy) • Second spectral line (?) (even less easy) • What else does the community want?
Current pipelines - Reduction • Read tapes • Automatically reject bad images • Calibration for V, I, B • Geometry and MTF estimation • Angular registration using noon drift scans, MDI, and planetary transits
Current pipelines – global modes • Spherical harmonic transform • Time series merge • Peakfind
Current pipeline - rings • Merge velocity images (input for all local pipelines) • Track and remap • Compute power spectra • Fits rings • Perform inversion
Current pipeline - farside • At sites: • Perform calibration • Remove bad images • Resample velocity to 200x200 • Send to Tucson • At Tucson: • Remap images • Perform 2x2 and 1x3 skip analysis • Construct farside map • Place on web
Current user access • DSDS (Data Storage and Distribution System) interface • Being upgraded for local helioseisology searches
Future pipelines • Magnetogram production: • Scale fields between sites • Merge magnetograms • Produce synoptic maps • Should be completed by end of year • Time-distance pipeline: • Produce phase-speed filter images • Produce cross-correlation maps • Produce travel-time measurements • Development starts after completion of magnetogram pipeline
Future data access • Integration of helioseismology products (time series, mode parameters, data cubes, flow maps, etc.) into Virtual Solar Observatory • Calibrated site images available in VSO via Stanford now
VSO Shopping Cart Carts are permanently stored, retrievable, and citable – searches can be replicated.
VSO API Provides link between VSO and other systems: IDL/SolarSoft, COSEC, EGSO, HelioScope, AstroGrid, Aladin, VO.
What is available to HELAS? • All data products • All code, pending approval from original authors (not expected to be a problem) • Documentation
The future • GONG instruments are aging and will eventually need to be replaced. • SDO will not last forever. • Is Solar Orbiter a comprehensive helioseismology program? • What does the community want to do next? • How will it be funded? • It can take a long time to get the next big thing going (typically 10-15 years in the US) • Suggest we start to seriously plan for the post-GONG and post-SDO era now. • We are willing to host a planning meeting in Tucson
