  3. Hand Taiyin Lung Channel

  4. The Lung primary channel connects with the Stomach, Large Intestine, and Lung.

  5. Lung: from Lieque LU-7 the luo-connectingchannel travels to the palm and thenar eminence.

  6. The Lung divergent channel ascends across the throat connects with the Lung and dispersesin the Large Intestine

  7. The Lung has five principal functions: • 1- governing qi and controlling respiration. • 2- controlling disseminating and descending. • 3 - regulating the water passages. • 4 - controlling the skin and body hair. • 5 -opening into the nose.

  8. The actions and indications of the points of the Lung channel can be summarized as: • treating rebellion of Lung qi manifesting as respiratory disorders such as coughing, dyspnea, wheezing, asthma and shortness of breath. • restoring the Lung’s disseminating function when this is impaired by exterior pathogenic factors which lodge in the superficial portion of the body.

  9. treating nasal disorders, including nosebleed and nasal obstruction. • treating disorders of the throat such as dryness, soreness, congestion, swelling and pain. • treating edema and obstructed urination when this is caused by impairment of the Lung’s function of regulating the water passages. • treating vomiting due to rebellion of Stomach qi.

ZHONGFU LU-1*** • Front-Mu point of the Lung • ACTIONS: Disseminates and descends Lung qi, stops cough, transforms phlegm, clears heat, regulates the water passages, descends Stomach qi • INDICATIONS: Cough, turbid phlegm, wheezing, fullness/ pain of the chest, heat in the chest, difficult ingestion

  11. YUNMEN LU-2* • ACTIONS: Clears Lung heat, disseminates and descends Lung qi • INDICATIONS: Cough, wheezing, wheezing, shoulder and arm pain with inability to abduct

TIANFU LU-3** • Point of the Window of Heaven • ACTIONS: Clears Lung heat, descends Lung qi, cools blood, stops bleeding, calms the corporeal soul (po) • INDICATIONS: Cough, wheezing, nosebleed, coughing blood, insomnia, sadness, disorientation, ghost talk, goiter, throat swelling, upper arm pain, dizziness.

  13. XIABAI LU-4* • ACTIONS: Descends Lung qi, regulates qi and blood in the chest • INDICATIONS: Cough, wheezing, heart pain, palpitations, medial arm pain

  14. CHIZE LU-5**** • He-Sea and Water point • Dispersion (child) point • ACTIONS • Clears heat from the Lung, descends rebellious qi • Regulates the water passages • Activates the channel, alleviates pain

  15. INDICATIONS • Cough &/or wheezing d/t heat or phlegm-damp, fullness of the chest, coughing blood, nosebleed, frequent urination, Bi pain of the elbow, arm, back or knee • Also used to strengthen Lung & Kidney relationship, e.g. Kidney not grasping qi

KONGZUI LU-6*** • Xi-Cleft point • ACTIONS: Disseminates and descends Lung qi, clears heat and moistens the Lung, stops bleeding, moderates acute conditions • INDICATIONS: Cough (acute &/or with blood), wheezing, chest pain, throat swelling and pain, severe pain of elbow and upper arm, headache, hemorrhoids.

  17. LIEQUE LU-7***** • Luo-Connecting point • Confluent point of the Conception vessel • Command point

  18. ACTIONS • Releases the exterior and expels wind • Promotes the Lung descending function • Pacifies wind and phlegm • Benefits the head and nape • Opens and regulates the Conception vessel • Regulates the water passages • Activates the channel and alleviates pain

  19. INDICATIONS • Exterior Wind invasion: Chills and fever, nasal congestion, throat pain, cough, sweating, facial paralysis. • Headache and stiffness of the neck and nape • Luo vessel problems: Weakness or pain of the wrist and hand, pain of the thumb, shoulder pain.

  20. Conception vessel* or Water passage problems: Post-partum, retention of lochia, bloody/hot/painful urination, edema. • * Conception vessel - frequently combined with KID-6

  21. JINGQU LU-8*** • Jing-River and Metal point • ACTIONS: Descends Lung qi, alleviates cough & wheezing • INDICATIONS: Cough, wheezing, sore throat, febrile disease, chest pain, wrist pain, much yawning, pain in the soles of the feet. • *** Used more in 5-Element styles than TCM

  22. TAIYUAN LU-9**** • Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source and Earth point • Hui-Meeting point of the Vessels • ACTIONS: Tonifies the Lung, transforms phlegm, descends Lung Qi, regulates the vessels, activates the channel, alleviates pain

  23. INDICATIONS • Qi Deficiency: Cough (esp weak or with watery phlegm), wheezing, shortness of breath, much yawning • Yin deficiency: Heat in the palms, dry throat, coughing blood • Irregular or faint pulse • Pain of the wrist, arm, shoulder, chest and back

  24. YUJI LU-10*** • Ying-Spring and Fire point • ACTIONS: Clears Lung heat, benefits the throat, descends rebellious qi • INDICATIONS: Cough (heat or w/blood), sore throat, loss of voice, fever, heat in the palm, vomiting, agitation.

  25. SHAOSHANG LU-11** • Jing-Well and Wood point • Sun Si-miao Ghost point • ACTIONS: Revives consciousness, clears heat and benefits the throat • INDICATIONS: Sore throat, mumps, nosebleed, fever, loss of consciousness, agitation, mania, pain of the thumb.

  27. The Large Intestine primary channel connects with the Large Intestine & Lung.

  28. Large Intestine: from Pianli L.I.-6 the luo-connecting channel travels to the jaw, teeth and ear.

  29. The Large Intestine Divergent channel travels medially to the spinal column,descends to the thorax, breast, Lung and Large Intestine and ascends along the throat

The primary actions and indications of the points of the Large Intestine channel can be summarized as: • treating all disorders of the yangming channel in the head; this area includes the face and cheeks, forehead, eyes, nose, lips, gums and teeth. • treating disorders of the ear (Large Intestine luo-connecting channel).

  31. expelling wind, cold and heat from the exterior portion of the body. • clearing wind-heat, interior heat and fire poison from the areas traversed by the channel, especially in the head. • clearing yangming fire which disturbs the Heart and spirit. • assisting the Lung in its function of opening the water passages.

SHANGYANG L.I.-1** • Jing-Well and Metal point • ACTIONS: Clears heat, reduces swelling and alleviates pain, revives consciousness • INDICATIONS: Toothache (lower jaw), sore throat, submandibular swelling, numbness of the fingers, febrile diseases w/no sweating, loss of consiousness, deafness, tinnitus.

  33. ERJIAN L.I.-2** • Ying-Spring and Water point • ACTIONS: Expels wind, clears heat and reduces swelling, alleviates pain • INDICATIONS: Toothache, facial pain or paralysis, nosebleed, sore throat, febrile diseases, blurring of vision.

SANJIAN L.I.-3** • Shu-Stream and Wood point • ACTIONS: Expels wind, clears heat, benefits the throat and teeth, dispels fullness and treats diarrhea • INDICATIONS: Toothache, acute eye pain, sore throat, nosebleed, stuffy nose, diarrhea, redness and swelling of fingers and dorsum of the hand.

  35. HEGU L.I.-4***** • Yuan-Source point • Command point of the face • Four Gates point • “Great Eliminator” (Worsley)

  36. ACTIONS • Regulates the defensive qi and adjusts sweating • Expels wind and releases the exterior • Regulates the face, eyes, nose, mouth and ears • Activates the channel and alleviates pain • Induces labor • Restores the yang

  37. INDICATIONS: • Exterior wind-cold (or wind-heat) pattern, copious sweating, absence of sweating. • Headache, hypertension. • Redness, swelling and pain of the eyes. • Nosebleed, nasal congestion, sneezing. • Toothache in the lower jaw, mouth ulcers.

  38. Throat painful obstruction, mumps, loss of voice. • Swelling of the face, facial paralysis, deafness, tinnitus. • Amenorrhea, prolonged or delayed labor. • Dysentery, constipation, childhood fright wind, wind rash, mania. • Painful obstruction and atrophy disorder of the four limbs, hemiplegia.

  39. COMBINATIONS • Little sweating: reinforce L.I.-4, reduce KID-7. Copious sweating: first reduce L.I.-4 then reinforce KID-7 • Difficult delivery: reinforce L.I.-4, reduce SP-6 and LIV-3 • Acute dysmenorrhea: L.I.-4 and SP-8 • “For cold and heat with painful obstruction, open the Four Gates” [L.I.-4 and LIV-3]

YANGXI L.I.-5*** • Jing-River and Fire point • ACTIONS: Clears heat and alleviates pain, clears yangming fire, calms the spirit, benefits the wrist joint • INDICATIONS: Headache, rhinitis, nosebleed, redness pain and swelling of the eye, toothache, sore throat, fright, mania-depression, pain of the wrist.

  41. PIANLI L.I.-6*** • Luo-Connecting point • ACTIONS: Expels wind and clears heat, opens and regulates the water passages • INDICATIONS: Redness of the eye, edema (esp facial edema), difficult urination, tinnitus, deafness, nosebleed, pain of hand and arm, sore throat, manic depression.

  42. WENLIU L.I.-7** • Xi-Cleft point • ACTIONS: Clears heat and detoxifies poison; moderates acute conditions, regulates the intestines and Stomach, clears yangming fire and calms the spirit • INDICATIONS: Headache, pain & swelling of the face, mouth & tooth pain, sore throat, borborygmus, abdominal pain, raving, seeing ghosts, pain of the shoulder and arm.

  43. XIALIAN L.I.-8** • ACTIONS: Harmonises the Small Intestine, expels wind and clears heat, clears yangming fire and calms the spirit • INDICATIONS: Abdominal pain, borborygmus, headache, manic raving, mad walking, pain in the elbow and arm, motor impairment of the upper limbs.

  44. SHANGLIAN L.I.-9** • ACTIONS: Harmonizes the Large Intestine, activates the channel and alleviates pain • INDICATIONS: Aching of the shoulder and arm, motor impairment of the upper limbs, numbness of the hand and arm, borborygmus, Large Intestine qi stagnation, abdominal pain.

  45. SHOUSANLI L.I.-10*** • “Arm ST-36” • ACTIONS: Regulates qi and blood, activates the channel and alleviates pain, harmonizes the intestines and Stomach • INDICATIONS: Pain / immobility of the arm and shoulder, windstroke, hemiplegia, deviation of the mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhea, toothache, swelling of the cheek.

  46. QUCHl L.I.-11***** • He-Sea and Earth point • Sun Si-miao Ghost point

  47. ACTIONS • Clears heat • Cools the blood, eliminates wind, drains damp and alleviates itching • Regulates qi and blood • Activates the channel and alleviates pain

  48. Any Excess Heat pattern • Fever, thirst, sore throat, toothache, redness and pain of the eyes. • Agitation, mania, poor memory • Hypertension, dizziness. • Various skin disorders (esp d/t Heat), itching of the skin.

  49. Distention and pain of the abdomen, vomiting and diarrhea, dysentery. • Bi & Wei patterns: Numbness of the upper arm, painful obstruction, hemiplegia, contraction, immobility and pain of the elbow and shoulder, weakness of the elbow, redness and swelling of the arm, atrophy disorder of the lower limbs, pain and swelling of the ankle.

  50. ZHOULIAO L.I.-12* • ACTIONS: Activates the channel and alleviates pain, benefits the elbow joint • INDICATIONS Pain, numbness and contracture of the the elbow and arm. • L.I.-12 is primarily used as a local point for disorders of the elbow (for example tennis elbow).
