Connectives • 2A sentence – The man walked down the street. The wrinkly, old man walked down the street. • 4A sentence - The wrinkly, old man walked down the long, winding street. BOYS – But, or, yet, so HANDS – However, Although, Nevertheless, Despite, Since
Verbs and Adverbs • The wrinkly, old man walked down the long, winding street. • The wrinkly, old man strolled down the long, winding street. (sauntered/meandered) • Slowly, the wrinkly, old man strolled down the long, winding street. (Carefully, thoughtfully)
2A / 4A sentences and Verbs The cat sat on the mat. The girl ran down the road. The boy hit the ball.
Wow Words Any word or phrase that the children read in a book or hear elsewhere….jot it down! Magpie those ideas!
Idioms • Here comes the technical bit… A natural manner of speaking to a native speaker of a language but basically….A phrase or expression. • E.g a shiver down my spine, armed to the teeth, a bag of nerves, butterflies in my tummy, down in the dumps. • Ask children to draw some…can you guess what they are and what they mean?
Ways of encouraging writing • Photographs and Images – think about the senses – feel? hear? see? smell?
Objects – stimulate questions Who? Where? What? Why? How?
Your turn… The Sorting Hat Harry walked in to the room with his friends. There were candles above his head. He felt a bit worried. Dumbledore spoke to the children. He waited for his turn to be sorted. He sat on the seat as the hat was put on his head. He wondered which house he would be in. He could feel the heat from the candles burning. He whispered to himself as the hat spoke to him. The hat told him he was in Gryffindor and he was happy. Use the ideas to help make this better!
