  1. Consolidation AD Gilles Le Godec / David Nisbet TE/EPC 2/11/2009

  2. Introduction - AD Experiment • Background • Accelerator already much past design lifetime • Research program now approved until 2014 – probable extension to 2016 • Priority for EPC: improvereliability of agingequipment • Consolidation proposal by the AD team: EDMS xxxxxx • In addition, extension of existingresearch program • AEGIS • PAX or ELENA

  3. Consolidation … MPC Section

  4. AD Ring Q-TRIM power converters • Modification of existing Danfysik converters (Q-trim 1-2-3-5 and B-trim) to ensure future serviceability. Prototyping/tests of 1 unit foreseen in 2009 and installation as of 2010 (turn over of the existing converter over a few years). • Replacement of ageing Q-trim4 with a new unit.

  5. BTI247S - BMAIN – QMAIN spare components • No spare unit (inductance + transformer) exists for the BTI247S switching dipole converter (TT2 to AD target). • No spare unit (inductances) exists for B-main and Q-main converters.

  6. AD ejection Line power converters • Replacement of ageing converters: 10 of the converters for the ejection line magnets are old and are getting difficult to maintain in a good operational state. Foreseen is the replacement with new units (Heinzinger).

  7. Budget MPC

  8. Consolidation … FPC Section

  9. AD injection/ejection Line • Consolidation of ageing P4KV capacitor discharge converters • All converters in building 370 • Converters are more than 30yrs old • Many interventions for failing capacitors (7 in 2008, 15 in 2009) • Other components such as short circuit switches are becoming unreliable with limited spares • Initial request to consolidate all Building 370 too expensive (1.2MCHF) • Half budget awarded, recently increased to 650kCHF • Proposal • Replace 5x converters with new systems – thus creates extra spares • Replace capacitors of 7x existing systems (plus spares)

  10. AD injection/ejection Line

  11. AD injection/ejection Line • When using maxidiscap or megadiscap converters, the current ramp is modified • Existing converters use LC resonance • New converters have controlled flat-top • Reproducibility improved, with energy saving possibilities • AD only requires beam every ~100s • Existing LC circuit requires 2.4s cycles to maintain thermal properties

  12. AD injection/ejection Line • Maxidiscap • Propose to test on existing circuit during 2009/2010 shutdown • Expect system to become operational after shutdown • Precision • Absolute: 1% • Reproducibility: 5 x 10-4 • Quantities • 1x operational • 1x operational spare

  13. AD injection/ejection Line • Megadiscap • Validation of design nearly complete • Precision • Absolute: 1% • Reproducibility: 5 x 10-4 • Increase in rms current requires some components to change • AD circuits have higher inductance compared to LINAC4 PSB (SMV circuits) • However all systems nearly identical (topology, controls, etc) • Quantities • 4x operational • 1x operational spare • Production of Megadiscap for LINAC4 and AD at same time? • Benefit from development and production synergies • Installation of 4+1 AD systems in March 2011 • Installation of 3+1 LINAC4 PSB systems in 2012

  15. New Projects…

  16. AD AEGIS Experiment • Experimentdesigned to trap anti-hydrogenatoms • Anticipatedrequirements: • Cost: ~60kCHF • Schedule: 2010??

  17. PAX Experiment • Installation of new quadrupoles in the ring: new power converters (Switchmode + PS Electronic) 35V-400A : Qty = 2 50V-700A : Qty = 2 70V-600A : Qty = 2 Schedule: ??

  18. ELENA Ring • In order to improve the trapping efficiency at the main AD experiments, a small additional decelerator&cooling ring has been proposed. ELENA is situated in the existing AD-Hall between the AD ring and the experimental area. Power converters Estimation = 860 kCHF (A.Beuret) Type: To be Defined Schedule: ?? Remark: according to T.Ericksson, It is not possible for the AD team to drive 2 projects in parallel (PAX+ELENA)  a choice shall be made…
