  1. Properties of Matter By Stella Cheng

  2. Summary Of Lesson

  3. Vocabulary • Chemical Property: the ability or tendency of a material to change its chemical makeup • Physical property: Able to be seen by the human eye. Example: color, smell • Boiling point: temperature where liquids turn to gas • Melting point: temperature where solids turn into liquids. • Freezing point: temperature where gas turns to a solid • Density:  measure of mass per unit volume • Volume:  measure of mass per unit volume

  4. Vocabulary Continued • conductivity- the ability to carry energy • solubility- how much one substance can dissolve in another

  5. The next pages background is dedicated to Nabyia

  6. Everything is made up of matter • Properties can be used to identify pure substances, elements and compounds, and to tell one kind form another kind • Some properties of materials could be color, state, Melting point, conductivity, and reaction with certain chemicals • Two main types of properties are physical and chemical • Matter is often defined as anything that has mass and volume

  7. Properties are a way to describe objects of matter • Others could be the hardness, texture, smell, or color • If an object has more density, the water will sink • gases are more dense than solids and liquids. • The melting point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit • The melting point of gold is 1,060 degrees Celsius • The boiling point of alcohol is 78 C • Sugar mixes evenly with water, meaning that it can dissolve in its substances such as salt and sugar are very soluble in water • Oil and sand, not so much • Mass is the amount of matter in an object or a material

  8. Kool-Aid is a great example of solubility……..……So………………

  9. Beyonds the Books (HeeHeeHee)

  10. Facts about chemistry • You can’t taste food without saliva • Fish scales are used to make lipstick • Coca Cola originally contained cocaine. • lobster blood is colorless until it is exposed to air. Then the blood appears blue. • fresh egg will sink in fresh water. A stale egg will float. • Although you may consider gold to be rare, there is enough gold in the Earth's crust to cover the land surface of the planet knee-deep.
