  1. Week #1 Discussions & Terms

  2. Middle Ages • What do our disagreements over positive/negatives tell us about the Middle Ages? • How might our differing POV’s impact the voice of historical facts? • Who were the winners by the end of the Middle Ages? • Losers?

  3. Unam Sanctum Use SOAPS to read this document What is the POV/bias? What does the nature of this bull tell us about secular/papal relations? If this fails: predict the ripple effect…

  4. 5 Big Themes Create a detailed annotation for each category

  5. TERMS Vocabulary on steroids… or with swag A good term will contain basic “5W” information; as well as, an explanation of significance. Resemble a mini paragraph on the topic

  6. Example EX: Catholic Pope, Boniface VIII, created the papal bull UNAM SANCTUM in 1302. This document was designed to reestablish papal authority over secular powers and illustrate to the French King Philip the Fair that monarchs were not permitted to tax or remit taxation without consent of the Holy See. This document’s failure is often considered the beginning of a significant decrease in papal power and a landmark in the formation of strong, centralized monarchial forms of government in Western Europe.
