Background Since 2007, new GP curriculum & exam, MRCGP for GP trainees MRCGP 3 components Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) 3 hour computer based multiple choice test Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) Simulated surgery of 13 patients Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA) All components test different skills

    4. What does WBPA involve? Consists of framework of 12 areas professional competence Tools are: Case-based discussion (CbD) Consultation Observation Tool (COT) Or Mini CEX in hospital posts Multi Source Feedback (MSF) Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ) Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) Clinical Supervisor Report (CSR)

    5. What is the eportfolio? Evidence for WPBA collected in eportfolio over 3 years of training Used to inform 6 monthly reviews At final review, used to make judgement of readiness of GPStR for independent practice As important as formal assessments! Provides feedback to GPStR & drives learning

Prime function is as educational tool Personal record of learning Evidence of experience which shows competence Can share entries with Educational Supervisor (ES) or keep private Validated by ES who can also make comments Different places to record clinical encounters/tutorials/teaching etc. Contains Personal Development Plan (PDP) Has a diary & mailbox Contains links to RCGP learning resources AKT/CSA results made available through it

    9. What do ARCP panel want to know? All e-portfolios are reviewed (PMETB requirement) Is this a safe Dr? Are they competent? Are they good at dealing with people? Is (s)he open and honest? Does s(he) continuously reflect & learn? And, is s(he) a Dr Id be comfortable seeing?

    10. Some pearls Where to put what in learning log? Make it relevant for you Record at 2 levels: general & specific Recording feelings is good Try and write in natural style Visit e-portfolio regularly Quality not quantity Use PDP effectively Make sure you do more than minimum number of assessments Dont miss sessions with Educational Supervisor

    13. 2. Make it relevant for you Include anything that is useful for you Useful tips Protocols Local guidelines Aide-memoire Clinical conundrum Patient encounters that were difficult Difficult encounters with staff Things that went well etc.. Aim to shift focus towards primary care

    14. 3. Record information at 2 levels- general & specific General entries may satisfy ARCP panel but of little educational use Being specific Makes you reflect on what you have actually learnt Useful log to refer back to in future

Recording your feelings is good Not just facts that are important to record How a case makes you feel, eg. angry, anxious, frustrated, is important for development Otherwise, may make mistakes again and again Avoid swearing/slagging off colleagues (may look unprofessional!) Remember to record good events/feelings too!

    16. 5. Try to write in your natural style Shows people what you are like as a person Easier for you to use

Visit e-portfolio regularly Find method of logging in and updating that suits you Helps you to become more familiar with it If all entries added at last minute, how does it look to ARCP panel? Remember to regularly check curriculum coverage Topics usually more difficult to cover: IM & T Learning difficulties Evidence based medicine Palliative care Genetics

    18. How much is enough? Simon Street (ARCP) suggests: Each week 1 clinical encounter 1 professional conversation 1 tutorial 1 reading entry 1-2 seminars Each year 5 SEAs 1 audit 4 courses Thats 190 entries (or 23 pages) a year

    19. 7. Quality not quantity However, make sure do not enter things for sake of it and better to have fewer good entries

    20. 8. Use PDP effectively Draw PDP from learning log entries when learning need/weakness identified Shows ARCP/ES that reflecting! Get in habit of sending log entries to PDP makes life easier

    21. 9. Do more than minimum number of assessments In case some do not reach criteria, eg.poor quality feedback given Try to do regularly if possible Shows progression Avoids mad panic at end of job! If problems getting then done, speak to clinical supervisor/GP trainer

    28. Take home messages Lots of jargon/acronyms to become familiar with May seem scary to start with, but is a skill that you will develop over time Remember that practice makes perfect! Have a go!
