  5. 4. POLYCENTRICITY and the GREEK NSRF • Emphasis on Territorial Cooperation • European Territorial Cooperation is part of the NSRF

  6. 4.1 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF • Sustainable Urban Development (polycentricity, development poles, etc.) • Development of the countryside - mountainous areas - mountainous areas of the islands • Development of island areas • Development of other rural areas and areas related to fishery

  7. 4.2 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF Sustainable Urban Development: • Polycentricity (Development Poles, including Crete, Aegean, Ionian islands) • Networking • Structures • Sustainable Development (urban environment, waste) • Social Issues • Diffusion of Information

  8. 4.3 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF Development of the Countryside: • Multi-functional Model of Development • Sustainable Development (account of environment and landscape) • Enterpreneurship (traditional and modern activities) • Mild (and micro-) Tourism Development and Agricultural Products • Functional Links with neighbouring Urban Centers (Day Mobility) • Special Categories: mountainous areas of islands - as mountainous areas (earlier above) - problems due to “island” character

  9. 4.4 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF Development of the Island Areas: • Internal Cohesion (into the region) • External Cohesion (linking to the Urban Centers) • Tourism and Enterpreneurship interlinked with Historical and Cultural Wealth • Use of Natural Assets (i.e. Renewable Energy Production) and Environmental Care • Info-society and Tele-services • Cross-border, Transnational and Interegional Cooperation • Islands are Border Areas

  10. 4.5 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF Development of other Rural Areas and Areas related to Fishery: • Accessibility to Services (of general Financial interest) and Quality of Life • Sustainable Economic Development combining traditional with modern Entrepreneurial Activities • Multi-functional Role of Agriculture as Natural resources Manager • Water protection and Bio-variability • Alternative Tourism • Networking with Urban and selected semi-Urban and Urban Centers (i.e. with Development Poles) • Sustainable Development of selected Fishing Areas, through Multi-Employment and Development of Inter-Sectoral Relations

  11. 4.6 TERRITORIAL PRIORITIES in the GREEK NSRF A POLYCENTRIC MODEL • Based on - Day systems - Development Poles, (metropolitan, urban, semi-urban) • Uses - Multi-functions, multi-modalities (among sectors and spaces) - Innovation  Information  Accessibility - Cross-border, Transnational, Interregional Cooperation • Takes account of - Sustainable Development (green action in economic and social life) - Crucial role of Islands • Achieves - Development and - Territorial Cohesion

POLYCENTRICITY AND “MED” KEY WORDS • Islands (Aegean and Ionian Islands) - Most of them are border regions for the E.U.: Aegean Islands - Crucial role for internal and external cohesion of MED space: inside MED and inside and outside the E.U.) - Polycentric type of “organisms” by definition: produce models • Multi-functionality, Multi-modality, Advanced Technology • Innovation  Information  Accessibility ----------- Polycentricity • Common development Prospects between “SEE” and “MED” Programmes

  13. 6. “MED” IN ACTION POLYCENTRICITY IN PRACTICE • KEY ACTORS, mostly needed • High levels of POLITICAL COMMITMENT, symbolic and practical • STRATEGIC INTERVENTIONS, to be elaborated • DIALOGUE WITH CENTRAL AND NORTHERN E.U. SPACES, to be promoted
