Gains Made By Women Under The New Deal • Women appointed to important federal positions • Slight increase in the number of women working outside the home • 4% increase of married women in the workplace from 1930-1940
Problems of Women Not Solved By The New Deal • Discrimination still existed in the workplace • Discriminatory wages • Discriminatory hiring practices
Examples Of Appointees To Important Government Positions • Frances Perkins: America’s first female cabinet member, secretary of labor, organized the Social Security Act
Gains African Americans Made Under The New Deal • Increased political voice through greater access to the president • Organizations created for tenant farmers
Problems of African Americans Not Solved by The New Deal • Segregation • Racial Violence • Racism in all areas of life • Roosevelt failed to support civil rights in all cases • Roosevelt was afraid of upsetting white democratic voters in the South
Examples of African American Appointees To Important Government Positions • Mary McLeod Bethune- An educator who dedicated herself to promoting opportunities for young African Americans • William Hastie and Robert C. Weaver- Appointed by Bethune and advised the Roosevelt Administration on racial issues, part of the “black cabinet”
Gains Unions Made Under The New Deal • Better working conditions • Increased bargaining power • Sit Down Strike: workers remained inside but did not work • Effective bargaining tool because scab workers could not be hired • Dramatic increase in union membership
Problems of Unions Not Solved By The New Deal • Strike Violence • Example: MEMORIAL DAY MASSACRE- Republic Steel Plant in Chicago 1937, Police attacked striking workers (10 died 84 wounded) • Big business opposition to labor unions
Example Of A Union Organized During The New Deal • Congress of Industrial Organizations- Steel and Automobile Industry, lasted until 1955
