  3. What is prayer?

  4. Empowerment by participation in and collaboration with God.

  5. Keeping company with God.

  6. A transformative and revolutionary act.

  7. Matthew 6:9-139 “This, then, is how you should pray:“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread.

  8. and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

  9. The Lord’s PrayerBasics:

  10. 1. Structure is similar to other Jewish prayers2. “Abba” was not a way that Jewish people began their prayers

  11. 3. Doesn’t mention Jesus nor is it prayed in his name.

  12. 4. The use of “debts & debtors” rather than “trespasses” (hoba)

  13. 5. 1st Century Christians were encouraged to pray it 3x a day

  14. 6. “The doxology” at the end. (Didache)

  15. “Teach us to pray...”

  16. The disciples wanted a special, private prayer

  17. Jesus gave them a community prayer (No “I’s”)

  18. This prayer provides us with a vision of our life together

  19. Disciples Prayer

  20. You can’t really know what you are praying unless you enter into discipleship

  21. First you know Jesus and then you show Jesus.

  22. Our Father, who art in Heaven

  23. The rightful place of God is FIRST

  24. “Abba” reveals an intimate personal relationship of Jesus to God.

  25. “the one who forgives, and knows how to give good gifts to his children...”

  26. Isaiah 64:8Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

  27. Isaiah 64:8no matter what we do, we can return to God

  28. This is a God Centered Prayer - it doesn’t begin with us...

  29. “...who art in heaven...”

  30. It is only when God is given his proper place that all other things fall into place.

  31. Deuteronomy 32:6Is this the way you repay the LORD, you foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?

  32. Deut. 32:6 they forgot that God is loving AND powerful

  33. Moses was astonished that people would let this happen.

  34. What does it look like when God is FIRST?

  35. 1. Being “right” with others - forgiving, acceptance2. Ability to lead a self less life.

  36. 3. Desire to keep God’s commandments
