Hypothesis • Our hypothesis is that more species of plants grow closer to numerous abiotic factors like lamp posts because the lamp posts provide shade from hot sunlight at different times of the day and gets in the way of animals that would normally eat the plants. • Independent Variable: • The distance from the lamp post. • Dependent Variable: • Number of plant species. • Our constants are: • Distance increment • Types of plants • Direction of increment

  3. Procedures • 5 trials at five different lamp posts in the IA parking lot. • Placed a hula-hoop on the ground at different distances from the lamp posts. • Recorded the number of plant species.

  8. Conclusion • As the distance from the pole increases, the number of plant species decreases. But there are other abiotic factors that can change the number of species. • In an actual population, there would be some species that would have adapted away from the lamp pole and would not need such an abiotic factor to help it survive. • Our hypothesis was mostly supported, but an improvement we could make to our experimental process is that we should use smaller units than the size of hula-hoops to record our data.
