  2. Tycoon • a very wealthy and powerful business person • An oil tycoon who's widely considered the most powerful man in the county

  3. Haven • a place where you are protected from danger, trouble, etc. • This national park provides a safe haven for wildlife.

  4. Assimilate • to adopt the ways of another culture : to fully become part of a different society, country, etc. • Schools were used to assimilate the children of immigrants.

  5. Desist • to stop doing something • Despite orders from the police, the protesters would not desist.

  6. Lucrative • producing money or wealth • The business has proved to be highly lucrative.

  7. Contort Twist or bend out of its normal shape; to distort My face contorted in pain.

  8. Smugness • An often unjustified feeling of being pleased with oneself or one’s achievements. • The player’s smugness about his accomplishments made him annoying to listen to. You almost wanted him to fail.

  9. Serene Calm, peaceful, or unruffled. He had a serene smile that put the crowd at ease.

  10. Irrelevant Unrelated, unimportant, or not relevant. His comment had nothing to do with the conversation, which made it irrelevant.

  11. Acrimonious . • angry and bitter • The conversation between Laura and Matt was acrimonious.

  12. Bilingual • able to speak and understand two languages • He is bilingual in English and Japanese.

  13. Repose • a state of resting or not being active • I enjoy the repose of a serene summer evening.

  14. Prolific • producing a large amount of something • She was a famously prolific author who could produce several works of fiction and nonfiction a year

  15. Ransack • to search (a place) for something in a way that causes disorder or damage • Robbers ransacked the apartment looking for money.

  16. Vernal • of, relating to, or occurring in the spring • Trees and flowers in vernal bloom. • The vernal freshness of the land.
