  3. Module 0: Expectations • Participants should have had one of the following: • College course in Hydrology • Engineering hydrology • Physical hydrology (typ. In Geosciences) • Forest hydrology (typ. In Natural Resources) • Two years experience in drainage analysis • Professional development course in SWMM, TR-20 or similar tools.

Module 0: Expectations • Participants should have ability (even if rusty) to convert US Customary and SI units • Most hydrology in USA is in US customary, but some reports are in SI. • Hydrology uses a lot of empirical methods that are units dependent. • The UTM coordinate system (on maps) is SI, and for our purposes is often easier to use than DMS and great circle calculations for distances.

Module 0: Expectations • Participant should have practical computer skills including: • General computing: Familiarity with concept of files, directories (folders), search paths. • Excel : Able to perform arithmetic on columns, generate graphs, build formulas • Internet Browser: Able to find, download, and read public domain documents

Module 0: Expectations • Participant should have practical computer skills including: • Acrobat Pro : Able to use some Adobe tools. • Map interpretation using the measuring tools in Acrobat Pro is quite useful and will be examined repeatedly. • Alternatives can be discussed as needed • HEC-HMS :Able to get the software started • Course assume minimal familiarity with HMS, you should be able to get the program started on your own. • How-to download for your “personal” computer will be demonstrated.

  7. Module 0: Course Structure • Day 1 • Overview of HEC-HMS • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Hands-on use of most components by following examples and exercises in a workshop environment. • Some regard to parameter values, but mostly get the feel for different parts of the program.

  8. Module 0: Course Structure • Day 2 • Parameterize HEC-HMS models • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Effort on proper parameter estimation for modeling. • Using calibration algorithms

  9. Module 0: Course Structure • Day 3 • Added realism in HEC-HMS models • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Modeling change in a watershed • Overview of Geo-HMS • Course Assessment (Examination)

  11. Module 0: Modules • Lecture • Presented as PPT slides, copies in course binder, electronic copies in course resources.

  12. Module 0: Modules • Examples • Examples are stored as PPT but intent is to do each example live with participants. The example PPT files skip many steps that are covered in the live participation. • Participation is vital in the examples, the instructor will go slowly so each participant can build their own “examples” and not simply import files.

  13. Module 0: Modules • Exercises • Simple exercises at the end of many modules to reinforce the learning principles. • Quizzes • Some quizzes during the course to reinforce learning principles and prepare for the graded assessment. • Assessment • Last module is a formal graded assessment.

Module 0: Resources • Software Required • HEC-HMS installed and running. • TSD can install on your work computer. • MS Office Suite (or similar Open Office suite). • Assumed already installed on your work computer. • Adobe Acrobat Pro • Measurement tool not always available in reader, but is part of Acrobat Pro. • TSD can install Acrobat Pro on your work computer.

Module 0: Example • At this point is subsequent modules would direct participants to a different set of files and begin a workshop-type mode. • In Module 0 the examples are: • Start and Stop HEC-HMS (proof-of-install) • Start and Stop Adobe Acrobat Pro (proof-of-install) • If not available, will adapt during this first workshop • Start and Stop of MS Excel
