American students ask questions when they don’t understand. • American teachers expect this, and appreciate it. • If you don’t ask questions, your teacher may assume that you understand and are ready to move on. • If you don’t ask questions, your teacher may also assume that you aren’t interested, don’t care, or don’t want to work.
To ask questions or say that you don’t understand: • Excuse me. I don’t understand. Could you repeat that please? • Did you say __________________? • What does ________________ mean? • Could you explain __________________? • Could you explain that again?
Sometimes, your teacher may ask you more questions, to figure out exactly what you don’t understand. • Your teacher is just trying to help you; don’t worry. • Answer the questions the teacher asks.
If you don’t understand… • The chances are that someone else doesn’t understand, too. • All students can benefit from hearing the answer to your question. • If your question is very specific to you, and the teacher thinks the other students will not benefit, he or she may ask you to meet after class. This is OK; just meet after class.
Things that cause some problems… • Not asking your question during class time, but waiting until after class. Ask it during class time. • Not asking at all, and then not understanding. • Not asking questions when it is clear that you are being taught something very new. Everyone needs clarification when they are learning something new.
In groups • Discuss attitudes toward asking questions in class (or during meetings) in your country. • What is the appropriate time to ask questions in your country? • If students don’t ask questions in your country, what do teachers think? • If students do ask questions in your country, what do teachers think? • In a one-hour class with about 20 students, how much time do you think should be spent on students asking questions?
Dictation Activity • Write down all the words that you hear, exactly as you hear them. • If you don’t understand something, remember, you have to ask!
