Function of the Digestive System • The overall function of the Digestive System is tot turn the food you eat into energy by absorbing nutrients.
Tongue • Pushes food around in the mouth to help crush it and create a bolus and then pushes the bolus to the back of the throat to swallow
Esophagus • A chewed bolus of food moves from the mouth to the stomach through the esophagus by peristalsis
Salivary Glands • Secrete saliva which contains an enzyme called amylase, which digests starch molecules into smaller molecules of the disaccharide maltose
Gall Bladder • Stores bile to be squirted down the ducts into the small intestine to help break down fats
Liver • Regulates chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile that helps break down fats
Teeth • Prepare food for digestion by chewing (mastication) which breaks down tough connective tissues and fibers
Colon (Large Intestine) • Absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body
Small Intestine • Responsible for absorbing most of the nutrients found within your food
Pancreas • The pancreas breaks down protein, carbohydrates and fats with its own digestive juices
Stomach • Churns food to break it down and releases food into the small intestine in controlled amounts
Illness’ Effect on Digestive System • Diabetes- In type 1, the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. Lifestyle choices (such as not eating healthy foods) can bring on type 2 diabetes and can eventually lead to the destruction of the spleen. • Sickle Cell Anemia- blood clots can cause necrosis in several “digestive” organs, especially the intestines. Reduced blood flow can lead to nutrients not being able to be absorbed as easily.
Continued • Heart Disease- Eating unhealthy foods can lead to high LDL’s and plaque buildup in the arteries which can lead to heart disease. • Urinary Tract Infection- No direct effects
